Healthy Sophie Cunningham ready to lead Mizzou women’s basketball to new heights

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/college/sec/university-of-missouri/article180017361.html

Quote:
The junior guard for the Missouri women’s basketball team only missed two games, but the back injury she was dealing with last season often times was debilitating.

“There were nights that I slept an hour,” Cunningham said. “I couldn’t lay down, I couldn’t stand up, and I could barely walk honestly.”

Even while ailing, Cunningham repeated as an All-Southeastern Conference first-team selection, averaging 17.5 points and 5.3 rebounds with 3.4 assists and 0.9 steals.

Quote:
Texas A&M coach Gary Blair said Cunningham plays with the most intensity of the SEC’s “elite” players, and although Cunningham takes pride in her aggression, she acknowledged it might have been partially responsible for her injury.

Quote:
“Mizzou Arena is going to be the place to be this year,” Cunningham said. “The men’s team is going to be outstanding and our team is going to be outstanding.”

McCowan had a monster 31 point 20 rebound game, if she keeps up her rebounding numbers she could challenge Wilson for some SEC POY awards. Z

In the final games prior to brutalizing each other SEC sisters picked on so weak sisters:

Mississippi State 112 Mississippi Valley State 36. Big T outpointed the Delta Devilettes with 41 of her own.

Texas A&M 72 SMU 57

Georgia 75 N. Florida 37

Ole Miss 75 Texas southern 58

Auburn 70 Xavier of Louisiana 44.

Alabama 91 Florida A&M 55

Arkansas 79 Grambling 62

Vanderbilt 92 Lipscomb 82 in which the Dores had to stage a comeback

It wasn't all smooth chomping on cupcakes as Kentucky fell to middle Tennessee

PostPosted: 01/02/18 8:04 pm    ::: Dawn and SoCarolina takes the SEC Reply Reply with quote

Having watched the last Miss St and SoCarolina games, if Dawn doesn't find a way to stave off the scoring droughts Miss St will upset them for #1 in the SEC.

With that said, Miss St's offense in their last game relied too much on the outside shot from Schaefer. I don't see her being able to be effective against So.Co. VV and TM should be their #1 and 2 options.

We will see. I can't wait to see UT, SoCo and Miss St battle it out during conference play.

It certainly seems like a top three (MSU, Tenn, USC) followed by two (Mo, TA&M) and then a scramble for one or two additional NCAA berths (Ga, LSU, Ark, Aub, Ala, Ky, Miss). I wouldn't be surprised to see either of the middle two pull off a home upset against the top 3, and a .500 SEC record along with a win over a top 5 school could push one of the others off the bubble.
