Good gig if you can get it!

Shoot, who couldn't use an extra few hundred dollar a month!

Now, there is a part of me that says that if I'm the one that is paying out the money every month, I'd be doing yearly checks/searches to make sure that the person I'm paying it to is really still alive!

It's got to be getting a lot harder to do something like that since things get recorded in computers and passed around electronically, but I would bet that there have been quite a few people who did that over the years. But you can still do it now as long as the person dies at home and you bury them in the backyard.

The daughter was 73, so she was really pushing it as her mother would have been 90+ if still alive and past her life expectancy.

I don't know why a judge would think no punishment was warranted. They seem to have a sympathy for criminals in many cases.

Because she is 73? Any prison time was likely to be a life sentence, so that has to be weighed in.

You might be surprised how many obvious cross checks are never made, regardless of how available the information. Stuff like this happens all the time, although usually not for thirty years.

I also don't understand the slap on the wrist for a thirty-three year fraud. I don't care what her current age is when she finally got caught.

One year in jail wouldn't be a life sentence. 10 years in jail might not be a life sentence. But even if it was - so what? Better to get caught and serve your punishment at the end of your life than 30 years ago. The years at the end of our lives are not as fun as those 30 years earlier so the punishment is less for old people - they are missing out on less. I think that the fact that she is unlikely to commit the crime again is probably responsible for some of the judges's sympathy for her. But it is better for people who know her, or hear of her and her crime to also hear that she spent time in prison, than to hear that she was not punished.
