She was cleared in an investigation, she then gave a nauseating, get-even interview and everyone thought this would be the end of her. This season, no transfers (yet), a surprising w/l record and even a vote for COY.

So is this a kindler, gentler McCauley? I'm sure the AD raked her over the coals after the interview and she's been out of the spotlight since, just coaching her team. What gives? In this season where it seems everyone is transferring, she has some stability on her team. Things might be different on the inside but even last year, we saw tons of ugliness on the outside. This season was different.

Two more years on the contract. Watch out next year, with ONE returning post player, not counting Ducky Odom, who played PF. Two McD's graduating and just one coming in. The good: Lexie Brown returning. The bad: Lexie Brown returning. The reason Coach JPM and Lexie get along is Lexie's quote after starting PG Kyra Lambert went down with an ACL "the team plays better when I'm at the point." That's some pure narcissism right there.

Did not see the social media blunders this year. There's a horde of longtime DWB fans waiting to return to the stadium until the coach is gone. The second round game at Duke (when Oregon took down Duke) had the worst attendance of the tournament.

I know you hate JPM...But wow...That's alot to dump on Lexie..She didn't save JPM's job...White did...and you better hold on to your hat because the prevailing feeling in Durham among Duke staff is that barring a total implosion there is no way he does not renew her....He likes her & more importantly he hates admitting he made a mistake.

A lot of season ticket holders that did not renew last year are planning to renew this year...for the players...even people you never thought would come back as long as JPM was there

I was at the Duke Oregon game...The crowd wasn't awful it was just a crappy time.

I was really shocked by Lexie's statement. Really, really shocked. It's the kind of totally self-centered trash that players known as arrogant make. Clearly Lexie thought she'd be the starting PG for the team but just as clearly she's a better shooter than playmaker. You just don't dump on a teammate like that - especially one who's performed her job well and just went down with a season ending injury. Maryland fans were not surprised by what she said, by the way. But, at the time Lexie said it, Maryland fans thought they were set up with a truly great PG for the next three years in Destiny Slocum. Ouch.

It makes no sense to sugarcoat the low attendance at Duke games or the fact that attendance will not significantly increase until JPM is gone. As much as Chidom and Cooper underachieved at Duke based on their ratings in high school, they will be sorely missed next season. As will Lambert.

So the reason for a successful season, relatively speaking, is Lexie saying the team is better when she's at point? Does that erase the negativity in the locker room which caused player after player to transfer? She suddenly stopped making terrible comments at the press conferences and embarrassing herself and Duke on social media. Something had to happen and apparently, the team is happy, which is about as big a one season turnaround as I've seen in wbb with the same coach.

Whether she stays or goes is another issue but as opposed to the start of the season, she appears to have been humbled and it paid dividends. Or has the AD told her that if she embarrasses Duke again, she's out with cause?

Maybe it can be put down to something as simple as a change in meds. Stranger things have happened.

A few observations.

1) Duke added Ashleigh Beaver as a strength and conditioning coach for the women's team. Her sole assignment is the women's team, rather than sharing a S&C coach with other sports. The amount of time lost due to injuries was significantly less than in previous seasons. Kyra Lambert was the only significant injured player, and her injury occurred in the NCAA Tournament. Emily Schubert tore her ACL before the season, but she was not going to be a contributor this year in any meaningful way. Haley Gorecki was injured last year and had surgery in the offseason from which she was slow to recover. This allowed for more consistent rotations and lineups and contributed to better team chemistry.

2) Duke relies heavily on a matchup zone on defense. As RobC has often noted, to run a good zone, there has to be constant communication; if you don't, then you get wide-open shooters, especially in the left corner. Good teams have been able to exploit Duke in that regard in previous year.
This year, the rotations were quicker, with shooters getting just a little less time to get the ball away. In general, Duke did a better job of zeroing in on hot shooters and forcing lesser shooters to hit shots.

3) The schedule was more favorable this year, with Duke's biggest wins coming at home - South Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Syracuse (though Duke did get wins over Syracuse and Miami on a neutral court in the ACCT as well).

4) Having Lexie Brown allowed Coach P to do a number of things. First, instead of micromanaging certain aspects of coaching, she let Lexie Brown be more free-flowing in terms of the offense. And having a player like Lexie who could take over games when opponents shut down the basic tenets of Duke's offense was immeasurable. Duke has not had a player like her since Alexis Jones - and she had a better year than Jones ever had. Brown has great from three, especially the right wing, could attack the basket and get to the line (where she made over 90 percent of her free throws), and was able to get into the paint for a short jumper.

And because Lexie is also a good passer, she was able to set up her teammates (e.g., Greenwell running around screens) and could take the load of being the primary ballhandler off of Kyra Lambert, as Brown could switch into the primary playmaker when needed. This also helped improve Lambert's game, as she was able to emerge as Duke's 3rd scorer and had a very, very good A/TO.

5) McCallie proved she could make adjustments and could motivate her team, especially one with as good of chemistry as this one had. But she still lacks behind other coaches in terms of the depth of her ability to make adjustments.

As an example, Duke was able to rally against ND in South Bend during the regular season, only losing by four points. Even though the team lost an early lead, the game was tied at the half. And though down 11 points with about 2:21 remaining, Duke used its defense to force turnovers and to close strong.

But in the second meeting - ACCT Final - Muffet McGraw showed why she is simply a better Xs and Os coach than McCallie. ND went up early - 9 points after 1Q, 12 points at the half. Duke opened the third quarter on a tear, rallying thanks to good passing to open shooters and true teamwork. Duke scored 10 straight points on four assisted baskets. McGraw called a timeout and adjusted her strategy, shadowing Brown, Greenwell, and Lambert with defenders (and making them take highly contested shots when they were able to get shots off) and forcing Duke's frontcourt players into taking shots (a number of jumpers) to try and score. After ND led only 43-31, this strategy led to a 16-0 run. McCallie did NOT call a timeout during that run or during the rest of the third quarter...and when the third quarter ended, Duke was down, 63-48. And after Duke cut the lead to 12 points in the fourth quarter, ND went on another run, 15-6...during which McCallie never called a timeout.

McCallie needs a lot of talent in order to be successful. But against good teams with coaches who can make adjustments - and do so to make moves and countermoves to what McCallie does - she still comes up short.

6) 2017-2018 will be a critical year for McCallie. She lost Chidom and Cooper to graduation and Lambert will likely miss the year (or most of it) with her ACL. This means that freshmen Mikayla Boykin and Jade Williams will likely emerge as the starters. The bench will have hard-working Erin Mathias and solid perimeter players who can give some good relief minutes in Primm, Gorecki, and Suggs, but the bench lacks scoring punch (a healthy Lambert would have meant Boykin coming off the bench which would have alleviated the lack of perimeter scoring).

But ND loses Allen and Turner (likely for the year as well, definitely for half of it), plus a solid roleplayer in Nelson. The loss of Allen will hurt, only because she has been the best facilitator in the ACC for some time and ND's starting point guard for four years. Lili Thompson is not a true playmaker/facilitator and the loss of the dominant force in the post in Turner will have to be replaced by committee. FSU loses Romero and other starters; Miami loses Thomas and Motley; Syracuse loses Peterson, Sykes, and the Day sisters. Basically, only Louisville returns its true core. ND may come back to the pack a little, with a few ACC losses.

Duke will have the opportunity, assuming Boykin can replace what Lambert brought and Williams can give Duke a solid post threat, to be #1 or #2 in the ACC. If this happens and the 2018 recruiting class is solid, look for McCallie to seek another contract.
