The Mid-American Conference has long operated in the Big Ten's shadow, so two Saturday interconference matchups were sweet for MAC fans. Toledo feel behind by a 15-5 count, but rallied to take a 24-23 halftime lead at Michigan. The Wolverines quickly reclaimed the advantage, but the Rockets knotted matters at 51-all with about 30 seconds to play. Michigan missed four subsequent field-goal attempts, necessitating overtime. In the extra session, Toledo held the hosts without a field goal en route to a 61-55 victory. Jasmine House hit a career-high 18 points to pace the winning effort, while no Wolverine scored in double figures.
Meanwhile, Bowling Green claimed the title of the Hampton Inn Classic with a 68-50 triumph over host Indiana. On Friday, BGSU had defeated IUPUI by a 66-55 count, while Indiana advanced with a 74-38 rout of Youngstown State. The Hoosiers drew first blood Saturday as Cyndi Valentin hit a layup for the first two of her eventual game-best 21 points. The visiting Falcons, however, scored the next nine points before IU came back to tie matters at 26-all. A Carin Horne jumper gave BG a 28-26 halftime lead, and the Falcons expanded the margin to 40-29 with 14:24 to play. Indiana never again cut the difference to less than a nine-point edge.
Valentin was backed by 18 points from Jenny DeMuth, but BG had four players in double digits. Horne paced the winning attack with 15 points, while Liz Honegger followed her 25-point outburst in the opener with 12 and claimed the tournament MVP award. Kate Achter added 11, while Ali Mann chipped in with 10 as the Falcons moved to 4-0 on the season. In the consolation game, IUPUI nipped Youngstown State, 53-50.
