Sad especially since it's in Michigan.

I've been following this story. Given that the team is supposed to report for camp on the 21st and the first World Championship exhibition game is on March 25th, I can't see how this is going to be resolved. The players are demanding to be paid a "living wage," and USAH has said "We don't have full-time employees as athletes and we are not going to -- it's not going to be the way forward," Fischer said. "The thing is, they know that. We have been clear with them." NWHL pay is about on a par with WNBA for top players. Speculation says USAH is going to try to field a team from the U-22 and U-18 rosters.

The team is still listed on iihf.com's as competing.

No resolution. USAH says they are trying to work with the players, and the players say USAH is lying.

USAH has said if this isn't resolved, they'll basically send their "B" team. That's if they want to go.

Summary by ESPN, but no actual news. http://www.espn.com/olympics/hockey/story/_/id/18979155/us-women-hockey-team-know-know-their-worlds-boycott

The team is stating that the U-22 and U-18 teams will not break the boycott and play for USAH at Worlds.

They said it could hurt their Olympic chances, but they've already qualified. Would the IOC be forced to replace them?

I think the makeup of the team would change. The current players have drawn a line in the sand. Who knows if they'll ever play for USAH again?

And now talks have broken down and USAH is trying unsuccessfully to assemble a team for the Worlds.

USAH doesn't pay the men's team members...they're either NHL players or receiving college scholarships. The demands of the women's team that USAH pay them because there's no comparable income from a pro league is wildly unrealistic. USAH has already said they don't employ players, period, and they've stuck to that position for a year.

I wonder if their "B" team or U-20 team doesn't go, if they'll replace them with another team(Germany? Japan?). IIHF would have to making that call now.

Missed this thread before, but the NWHL salaries are not even close to the WNBA ones. When the league began the player minimum was $10k and the max was $26k. The cut the minimum to $5k, but I am unsure if they cut the max as well.

WNBA players make about 4 times those original amounts for both minimum and maximum.

http://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/article/18996828/us-women-hockey-team-boycott-usa-hockey-takes-another-wrong-turn-talks-women-team

And instead of negotiating USA Hockey looked for replacements and got turned down at every turn....with the other major league Players unions showing solidarity good article and summary...really not looking good here

EDIT...and this just sounds pathetic

http://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/article/19004695/usa-hockey-reaches-d-iii-players-rec-league-players-potential-replacements?addata=espn:frontpage

Yikes and Seriously? Rec League?

Guess only saving grace is that women's hockey doesn't permit checking...because otherwise you'd know someone would smash one of those scabs into the boards to send a message and do it in a legal way.

this has really gotten sad...either pay your players or pull out and work out a deal to PAY YOUR PLAYERS for the next tournament...no one wants to play of any signfigance without a deal so suck it up.

Also, for anyone that doesn't know the Women's World Championship is set up odd. The top four seeds are in one group and seeds #5 - #8 are in another group.

Group A: USA(1), Canada(2), Finland(3), Russia(4)
Group B: Sweden(5), Switzerland(6), Czech Republic(7), Germany(8)

The top 2 teams(usually USA & Canada) in Group A get a bye to the semifinals. Third place of Group A faces second place of Group B. Fourth place of Group A faces First place in Group B. With a team full of D3 players, the USA may not even make it to the semifinals.

Now the men's team is talking boycott as well to stand in solidarity with the women.

I am not sure how I feel about the pay issue since "we don't pay anyone" seems a fair and equitable position to take. Job opportunities in the sport outside of USAH really isn't their responsibility. On the other hand, if not paying means you won't be able to field a team and the realities of the training and time requirements make it not worth it for the women to do, then USAH should rexamine their policy/position and figure out what they need to do to meet their player's needs. They do have a duty, imo, to make sure they are able to field a competitive women's team, and to spend the money required to do so.

But this pay issue is not their true sin. Where USAH does not have a leg to stand on is their failure to support women's developmental leagues in an equitable fashion. They spent $3.5 million on young men, but have no such program for young women. That needs to change.

That's outstanding! Hopefully this means more friendlies being played. Friendlies are rare in ice hockey(men's & women's).

Just saw this on NHL Tonight. I love my Pittsburgh Penguins, but after that I'd rather watch the women play. Great news!

On the downside, I just learned that due to state budget cuts, North Dakota is mothballing it's women's hockey program at the end of this season
