Who will end up a Freshman of the Year?

It will likely be someone who gets a lot of time as a freshman at her position and puts up significant numbers for a team that gets publicity.

Thinking there might be a dark horse in this race who hasn't gotten much publicity yet. I have no idea who it might be.

I'm going to go with Sabrina Ionescu. She is the player that goes into the season where she will automatically be the best player on her team. I think Dangerfield and Joyner Holmes have an outside shot. CD, based on her position and UCONN's need for it and Holmes has the most college ready frame and athleticism.

I like Amber Ramirez - TCU for FOY, she'll have the green light form the start and the ball in her hands more then say Ionescu who would be my second pick.

This one is tough but Joyners Athleticism is by far and away above most for her size but i also think she needs a bit more discipline on both ends of the floor with experience that will improve. Of course Young is A safe pick without question also.

I like Ramirez, she is going to a team that needs her to score and she'll have a lot of opportunities to be a go to player from day one.

I like Ramirez as well. Just not sure TTU will get enough attention or credibility for her to win it.

On the other hand , Anigwe won last year on a really disappointing 15-17 (5-14) Cal team, so I suppose it's possible.

Ramirez will certainly get lots of minutes, and lots of points assuming double teams don't slow her down.

Ramirez plays for TCU, not Texas Tech. I think she will face a lot of double teams in conference play, but I think she'll get a big start on her numbers because of non-conference games. They play @ND and host A&M, Butler and SMU. But besides those games, the only other somewhat notable OOC game is @LSU. Their remaining games are against Incarnate Word, Sam Houston St., Grambling, McNeese St., Texas Southern, and Alcorn St. Not trying to pick on their OOC, but it's obviously easier than their conference games. Considering that A&M should be down this year, TCU might go 10-1.

I like Slocum.

Maryland is a high profile team with lots of returning potential which means Slocum might not experience double teams, has an environment where she doesn't need to carry the team, and really should get an opportunity to see lots of minutes.

Jackie Young got a lot of press for breaking the Indiana state career HS scoring record ( for boys or girls), but Boley actually scored more points in her high school career than Young.

So who would win this poll today? Slocum? Holmes? McCoy? Odom?

Ramirez has started slower than I anticipated. She's starting now for TCU, but hasn't been shooting as much as I anticipated she would. She's actually shooting 50% from the arc, but hasn't really taken that many 3s.

Has Ionescu been injured? Young was starting to play well but then sprained her ankle vs UConn and really hasn't gotten back to where she was. Boley has come along more slowly but has started to get more minutes.

Odom got zero votes in this early poll but is now starting and is a big part of Duke's success.

Lot of season yet to go, but I'd put Slocum, Holmes and Odom as the frontrunners right now.

Right now I would say Slocum but this is so wide open and none really making a big push.

Ramirez has been out hurt for a while now, I would go with Slocum, but wouldn't sleep on Nancy Mulkey who has been over looked because of Cox and Homles, but she looks as good as Homles and better then Cox to me.

I've seen videos of HS/AAU/USAbb but FOY is about what they do in college, right?

I myself haven't seen many freshmen. Slocum certainly looked good vs CT but then Dangerfield looked real good against Baylor but I've seen her all season and wouldn't nominate her at this point. One or two good games isn't enough for a season-long award IMO.

Here are the current freshman leaders in a few stats:

Points/game - Nadine Soliman UNCG - 18.5

rb's/game - Shannon Dufficy Utah St. - 9.6

assist/turnover - Calveion Landrum Baylor - 3.45

mins/game - Tyler Morrison SE La. - 35.67

The CAA is raving about Kamiah Smalls and Lexie Barrier of JMU. Both have been Rookie of the Week, Smalls at least twice. Of course the CAA is mid-major, so *shrug*

Smalls is from that basketball factory in Philly, Neumann-Goretti.

Lots of inconsistency with the Frosh. Not too surprising.

Ionescu was pretty outstanding until she got injured. I don't know when/if she's coming back.

edit: ok, that inspired me to go look. Apparently she is practicing with the team again after a "hand injury" that has been keeping her out. Unclear if she will/won't be able to play this weekend in the Bay.

I'm going Slocum. Because she really hasn't done that much, but she had one good game versus UConn so she must be one of the greatest players in college basketball Razz

Ionescu broke her right thumb, but is back tonight against Cal. She says she feels no pain at all ...
