The NJCAA tournament is also next week in Lubbock, Mon 3/20-Sat 3/25.

Defending champ Gulf Coast is the top seed.

Man, I remember when this used to be held in Salina, KS. I will NEVER forget my first time going there to recruit and I was on this little prop plane from Kansas City to Salina and I really thought I was going to die. That plane was shaking & rocking more than any plane I had or have ever been in to this day. But, what makes the trip so memorable for me as a young coach was sitting beside me was Sylvia Hatchell and others on the plane included Chris Weller (Maryland), Rick Moody (Alabama) and Carol Ross (Florida).

Thanks for all that info, Petrel. (That's a LOTTA basketball I had no clue about.....) And I see several teams near me were playing in the tournaments. I'll have to pay better attention next year.

One more.

The NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Div I tournament starts today and runs through Saturday. Information, schedule, and video links at:

http://www.thenccaa.org/sports/2012/6/26/WBB_0626120234.aspx?path=wbball

I found out this existed when Notre Dame played an exhibition to start the season last fall against last year's NCCAA Div I Champion, Roberts Wesleyan College of Rochester, NY.

For a bracket, try:

They also used to have the Big 8 Tournament here before it became the Big 12.

NCAA Division III championship belongs to Amherst. They beat Tufts in the title game, 52-29.

The game was not that close. Tufts only hit 24.4 percent of its field goals. Amherst led 20-6 at halftime. Melissa Baptisma of Tufts finished with a 1-for-14 shooting performance.

It looks like the D-II final will be Ashland (OH) vs Virginia Union. VA Union stormed back to beat CA Baptist 86-81 earlier this evening and Ashland is currently up 20 on Harding (AR). The final will be played Friday night. I have a lasting fondness for VU because some years back when I first came to Richmond I got lost and found myself on the VU campus. Some female students kindly redirected me and were so nice and polite that I got a very positive impression of the place.

I saw the last quarter of the second game Division II semifinal (winner Ashland). The players were better than I expected. And it was nice that you didn't have a situation where the defensive players could smother the opposing offense.

I know that it's kind of late, but I have a little experience with this tourney/area.

They play the men's and women's games alternately, at the same site. That's why you see a long times between some of the games (some places they only have 1:45). They might do a men's game, a women's game, a men's game, etc. They might do two women's games, two men's games, women's game, etc.

It's pretty much all-day, all-basketball. The facility is very nice, fairly new. It's usually just families of the players and a few locals that attend, so seating isn't a problem. If I remember what a high ranking official of the college told me correctly, the floor is from the 2011 Women's Final Four.

I don't think that there is much else to do in the area if you need a break from basketball. There is a nice lake near campus, but let's face it, it's mid-March in northern Indiana. Temps could be anywhere from 0-65. Might not want to pack the bathing suit and flip-flops.

If you want, yo could go to ND (about an hour away) for their games or Purdue (about 2 hours away, if they're hosting) for their games. While that's maybe not really a break from bball, at least the drive time is.

I might have more useless info if someone has a question. Laughing
