Fred Williams is in attendance at today's Melbourne-Canberra game.
I'm guessing he enjoyed Liz's 38 points (16/18 ) & 13 boards in 25 minutes.

Round 9
Led again by Williams & Whitcomb, Perth Lynx continued their steady climb up the ladder and now sit clear at #1.
Liz Cambage had a huge response to last weekend's disappointments.
Sydney's form slide has kept the race for the #4 spot wide open. Asia Taylor had a rare quiet (by her standards) game and it probably cost Sydney the game.

So Luuuc, what has happened to Adelaide? They looked pretty good at the start of the season but seem to have imploded.

I wouldn't say they've imploded exactly, it's just a very even league this season. They just beat a Sydney team that has been playing very well. Perth will have nights when they're "on", and there's no shame in losing to them in that mode. All Adelaide is missing I think is a go-to type, like a Taylor, Cambage, or Williams, who can take over if needed.
Losing Laura Hodges to injury was a significant blow as well.

Round 9 TV game - Townsville Fire @ Sydney Uni Flames, which was a good, close one.
Includes a couple of short features before the game, on Zitina Aokuso and Asia Taylor.

Round 10
Every team played once at home and once away this round.
Sandy Brondello was in the stands today watching the Adelaide-Melbourne TV game, which wasn't pretty, but went down to the wire.
The Good:
Perth extended their winning streak to 11 games - a club record
Canberra broke their 13 game losing streak
Melbourne are hitting some form and have climber to 2nd place
The Bad:
Bendigo continues to suck without Kelsey Griffin.
Dandenong were so undermanned that assistant coach (and former Opal) Sam Richards suited up for them today. New injuries also affected Perth (Burton), Adelaide (Novosel), Sydney (Taylor), and ...
Rachel Jarry, who only recently returned to action after missing several weeks due to concussion, copped another hit to the head today and was taken to hospital

Round 11 match between the Sydney Uni Flames and Bendigo Spirit
A pretty one-sided affair unfortunately, with Rachel Banham & Betnijah Laney the only Spirit players to reach double digits.

Hopefully this afternoon's televised match between the Lynx & Boomers delivers a better spectacle.

Round 12
With one weekend of action left, the playoff participants are locked in, though not without a fight as Adelaide beat Melbourne and then today took Sydney to OT before going down.
Dandenong's nightmare month continued. Bendigo scored a rare win, but then copped a record-breaking annihilation in Townsville. The Fire are hitting some great form at just the right time.
Perth guaranteed themselves 1st place with today's win over Melbourne, who kept Cambage out as a precaution (groin strain) and were also without Bec Cole (knee). The Lynx will be sweating on the state of Courtney Williams' foot/ankle, which prematurely ended her afternoon today - but not before she single-handedly turned the match Perth's way in a 5 minute rampage.
Bendigo 64 (Payne 16p 4r 4a, Banham 16p, Laney 15p 6r 4a, Richards 13p 11r, Karaitiana 2p 7r 5a)

Luuuc, now that her season is over, is there any insight over there on which way Magbegor is leaning for next year. It seems like the Australian boards have discussed the positives and negatives pretty well. I am assuming her camp knows about the rules. Presumably they are aware that she would be a first round pick in 2019 right now and that she will almost certainly be considered good enough to bring over right away at that point. They would then be aware that even being at UConn as long as EDD was would then push her to the 2021 draft at a minimum unless the rules change in the new CBA. |

I haven't heard anything, but will let you know if I do.
Last thing I heard from her was a couple of weeks ago on a podcast. She was asked about it and basically said she hadn't made up her mind about it, and her next focus seemed to be the SEABL season down here (which is still a few months away).
So I'm thinking we might not hear anything definitive for a while.

Round 12 match between Perth Lynx & Melbourne Boomers was a bit of an anticlimax, with Cambage sitting out as a precaution. Even without Liz, the Boomers actually out-played the Lynx for most of the first half, until some overly feisty defence from Monique Conti on Courtney Williams fired her up, and from that point Williams was not going to lose. It's worth watching just for the last 6 minutes of the 2nd quarter:

Round 13 - Final round of the regular season
With the top 4 set, the main things at stake this round were whether Sydney or Townsville would have home court for their upcoming semi finals series, whether the bottom 4 teams could finish the season off on a positive note, and whether the 4 playoff teams could stay healthy. Sadly for the last point, Perth suffered potentially serious injuries in both their games and the fans are now sweating on Dowe (knee) & Whitcomb (wrist).
Canberra continued their late season revival by beating Perth, and Adelaide finished with a win as well. Dandenong's losing streak extended to 7 games, which sadly came on national tv, where they scored 0 points in their last quarter of the season. Ouch. Bendigo copped another 2 L's as well. The big result was Sydney piling on 107 points against Townsville to claim the #2 spot.
Jen Hamson has found some nice form in the final weeks of the season and will be important against Batkovic & George in the semis.

Playoffs begin in 3 days. Best-of-3 semi finals (A-H-H format) followed by best-of-3 finals. All games televised and hopefully live streamed as well on http://foxsports.com.au/live (I'm not sure whether that is geo-restricted)

I noticed Hamson is playing better this season. She looked good in the few games I caught via YouTube. But I think the difference is they don't really bang inside there. In the WNBA, she seems to stay clear of the paint to avoid contact unless she's going 1 vs. 1. Let's she if she sticks in the WNBA in 2018.

She and Shaqator Both should play a few more seasons overseas then try the W a bit later. Neither showed they were ready for this level of play for my wings. They were banned from the hardwood and it was well deserved !

Hamson did play better with the Fever in 2017 than previously in 2015 with LA, but she's still a sloth inside. Of course shot blocking is the best part of her game but she seems to run the floor well now and developed a nice pick-and-roll. Let's see if she added anything for 2018.

Hamson was named POTW for Round 13. Still has work to do to be effective as a WNBA player, but these past few weeks are as good as I've seen her play here.
Round 13 match between Melbourne Boomers & Dandenong Rangers was predictably one-sided considering the Rangers losing streak, but even I didn't see a 0 point 4th quarter coming. Watch at your own risk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STNTe6bKYIM

The semi finals started tonight, and it was a painful start for Lynx fans.
Cole, Dowe & Whitcomb (all of whom have had recent injury worries) all played, but big worries for Perth as they lost big despite major foul trouble for Liz. Boomers did a great job with their defence, led by Bec Cole & Jenna O'Hea, and were raining threes at the other end. Perth looked decidedly fatigued by the end (no surprise considering their recent schedule) and it's going to take something special for them to get this series even with home court from here.
Melbourne 92 (Cole 21p 3a 3s, Cambage 16p 9r, Smart 15p 5a, Garrick 14p, Purcell 8p, O'Hea 7p 4r 11a 5s, Tomlinson 7p 6r 3b, Grant 4p 5r)
Perth 76 (Kunek 22p 4r, Whitcomb 19p 5r 3a 3s, Williams 14p 8r, Farnworth 11p 3s, Dowe 2p 8r 3a)

Ouch, 6-19 for Whitcomb and 7-23 for Williams really hurts. Something definitely looks like it was working for Melbourne's perimeter defense. This would be the intrinsic unfairness with the system where a league becomes virtual knockout at the end. You spend all year proving who the best team is and then decide the actual winners in a week or two at the finish.
I haven't managed to time it right to check whether I can watch a live game, but any of the archived videos of full games on that Fox site say they're unavailable outside Australia (suggesting live ones probably won't work either). Which is a bit of a shame. Seems like pretty unnecessary geo-blocking considering the WNBL presumably won't make any money selling games outside Australia. |
