Two years ago, for the first time, more high school girls played volleyball (432,176) than basketball (429,504), according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. In 2015-16, volleyball added another 4,133 girls to those numbers, while basketball lost 276 participants.

I find it interesting as well. Basketball gets more coverage & has the WNBA. No pro volleyball league in the US &very little coverage of college volleyball.

I have often wondered if more girls are taking up volleyball instead of basketball because it's less likely to be injured playing v-ball.

I'm not sure that there is less risk of injury playing volleyball. I covered both sports over four seasons. It sure seemed like I witnessed more season, or even career-ending injuries from volleyball.

I've been a CU vb fan for 25 years now - a few years longer than even Buffs basketball. Attended more vb matches this year than bb as well. Ironically, a former wbb coach told me she was enjoying watching vb this season even more than bb.
