Sportstvratings.com numbers are just cable viewership. Adding in people with sat dishes or people streaming the games would be a lot more. People are cutting the cord more frequently now. I'd like to see data from WatchESPN viewers as well as the conference and school games available by streaming.

They include satellite.

They don't include streaming, but when streaming numbers are released they are always, in my experience, insignificant compared to the TV numbers. ESPN does announce them on occassion. And for last spring's NCAA men's basketball tournament, the NCAA published the numbers. There were 22 million TV viewers for the championship game alone. In contrast, the streaming video for the entire tournament, every game, totalled 3.4 million live video streams and 1.1 million live hours of video consumption. They said that the total for TV and online combined was over 41 million hours of viewing for the full tournament, of which only the 1.1 million was online.

That's a 40:1 ratio, and the CBS March Madness Online is one of the most long-standing and best established streaming sports media products. It's free for everyone, high quality, and has for years been the means for people to watch the tournament while at work, so if anything one would expect it to outperform most other streaming sources.

Satellite and UVerse/FIOS are included, but not OTT services like DirecTV Now, PS Vue, or Sling TV yet. As you said, data for streaming of simultaneously broadcast events still shows it to be pretty low even if it is growing. ESPN usually reports 1-2% and the Olympics were right around 1%. The NFL Twitter experiment was right around that figure too.

ESPN2's women's basketball game between South Carolina and Mississippi State beat everything on FS1, the NFL Network & NBCSN yesterday.

In the same 7-9pm slot, the MBB game between Duke and NCSt drew 1.316M (ESPN).

The first (8-9pm) hour of WWE Monday Night Raw drew 3.309M (USA).

The Knicks-Pacers game that began at 8 on TNT drew 976,000.

And demonstrating again what a black hole ESPNU is, the TCU-OU MBB game from 7-9 drew 87,000, which I think was the network's highest rated show of the day, so Dietsch could have added that to his list. Indeed ESPNU was worse than the three he named by at least a factor of 2.

Any predictions for most watched games tomorrow, as there are a bunch of nationally televised games.

UCLA @ Stanford 9 PM EST ESPN2
Texas @ Baylor 8 PM EST FS1
Louisville @ Notre Dame 7 PM ESPN2
Miami @ FSU 7 PM RSN
Ole Miss @ Florida 7 PM SECN

I'll go:
1. Louisville/ND
2. UCLA/Stanford
3. Ole Miss/Florida
4. Texas/Baylor
5. Miami/FSU

Texas/Baylor is the hard one to pick, FS1 ratings seem to be much lower than ESPN's of the world. But can two bad teams on SEC Network beat the Baylor/Texas game? SEC Network distribution is good whereas Raycom Sports/ACC is sort of a hodge podge of regional networks and I've heard complaints about lack of coverage, blackourts, and so forth.

Top ranked UConn’s 66-55 milestone 100th-consecutive victory over No. 6 South Carolina on Monday, Feb. 13 (9 p.m. ET, ESPN2), delivered a 0.9 overnight rating, marking the highest-rated college basketball game on ESPN2 this season among men’s and women’s telecasts, and the highest-rated women’s college basketball regular-season game since 2010. Digitally, the game also attracted 69,000 unique viewers with a total of 1,700,000 minutes watched, which makes this matchup the most streamed women’s college basketball regular-season game to date televised by ESPN. The Big Monday matchup ties Tennessee vs. Duke (Jan. 23, 2006) as the fourth-highest regular-season women’s college basketball game across all ESPN networks.

Awhom, are you aware of any other college basketball situations like the men's ACC tournament where the same games are actually telecast by two different networks with separate cameras, announcing crews, the whole deal?

They have both a Raycom broadcast syndicated on local TV stations and it's on ESPN. But unlike what they do for sone ESPN carried NFL games, they're not sharing a single product and feed. (Personally I've mostly been watching the Raycom broadcasts.)

I guess there would be various issues in looking at ratings. To see the level of interest in the games, you need to sum the separate ratings, but to compare which source is doing better and for advertising purposes you need to look at them as separate shows I assume.

Just curious as to your thoughts.

Certainly seems like an expensive proposition of dubious value to duplicate everything. Nice as a fan to have a choice, though. Wish I could switch to a different network for the same game every time Doris Burke is announcing. Very Happy

It is interesting to use the dual tuners on DirecTV and be able to go back and see how the two networks dealt differently with the same on-court event. It's quite remarkable sometimes the differing viewpoints and emphasis.

I do not believe that any other similar situations exist, although I think that there have been a few in the past.

The is a vestige of the previous ACC deal in which Raycom was the primary rights holder and ESPN sub-licensed from them. For those that do not know, the ACC Men's Tournament and the first Duke-UNC game of each season have been on Raycom for a while. Before the current deal, they were the only available broadcast within the ACC footprint and ESPN was blacked out. Now we have a separate Raycom produced broadcast that is both syndicated on local stations (now only within the ACC footprint as opposed to right after the new TV deal when they were actually shown OTA all over the country) and also shown for free online worldwide. The choice of online feeds is great, especially with the day games and they have been available since before WatchESPN access was widespread.

This process was criticized by a lot of people, especially Duke and NC State fans, who believe that UNC alum commissioner Swofford forced ESPN to accept the terms of the sublicense due to familial ties to Raycom Media. The belief is that ESPN probably paid less than they would have if they had exclusive rights to those games. The official reason given, even in 2017, is that the ACC has a large number of longtime fans in rural areas without cable, especially in the state of North Carolina apparently. Apparently ending the decades old tradition of local broadcasts of the ACC Tournament would be detrimental. This all looks set to be eliminated once the ACC pay TV channel is established.

Ratings for these games are ESPN-only. One would have to look at local ratings of broadcast networks to determine the ACC Network ratings. The ACC Network ratings are big enough to have an impact on national broadcast network ratings, which is currently annoying some of the diehard entertainment programming ratings followers who I read regularly. Nielsen would sum the ratings if they were the same broadcast feed with the same commercials, like when CBS and NFL Network simulcast Thursday night games.

I guess we disagree on Doris Burke. I think she's above average among announcers of men's college basketball. I can't stand her on women's basketball at all though.
