An arena with 4,200 max fans = FAIL
An arena in Virginia = FAIL
An empty Phone Booth = FAIL
Hope I'm clear enough.
If this team cannot attract more than 4,200 people to big games, it is a MAJOR FAILURE which is directly due to Leonsis destroying local interest in this team. All the phony attendance figures when everyone knew the arena was close to empty was ridiculous. This move out of the phone booth is finally admitting they were reporting bogus numbers, but it is completely wrong for building up a franchise. On the other hand, it is the right move for completing the destruction of this franchise. |
I agree!!!!!

Looks like no one told Elena or Kristi that their new franchise is circling the drain. You would have thought LA and Chicago would have warned them.

A smart person would lock in their Mystics season tickets now instead of whining on a message board.

For the sake of argument, let's assume Art is correct (and his facts are usually on point) ...
The received wisdom is that most WNBA teams have around 4,500 actual fans in the seats most nights. (No-shows, freebies, etc., create the higher reported attendance.) But this site is not a good one (how will the parking be?), so 4,000 is a reasonable total.
To me, putting 4,000 people -- or even 3,000 -- in a 4,200-seat facility will create a great atmosphere that will be fun to experience and good on TV.
In addition, Leonsis, according to Art, is now committed to the Mystics for 20 years, which is also good news.
Finally, the history of the league suggests pretty strongly that there won't be that many nights that the facility isn't big enough to handle demand. Yes, money will be left on the table for several games each year, and conceivably for an entire season should the Mystics become very good, but on the flip side, the franchise's location and existence appear to be guaranteed, which is a pretty strong positive.
Add it all up, and I don't think it's that bad a deal ...

Yeah - 20 years of planned mediocrity isn't so bad...Sure hope they take all those attendance award flags and fly them high...4,000 max is such a low ceiling, Chelsea Gray's rainbow threes will probably hit it.

I'm starting to get annoyed that my team isn't signing a bunch of players I've never heard of.

Great first article about this season's team!!!! SWK needs to focus on learning everything TRP does. Get on the iso-cam and watch every little thing she does out there. That's how she gets more floor time. If she can come close to providing the defense, rebounding and connecting plays that TRP does, then the Styx will be offensively dangerous from ALL FIVE POSITIONS.

SG: Hill, Walker-Kimbrough, Kraker, Morissette, Simms
SF: Ruffin-Pratt, Range, Taylor, Washington
PF: DelleDonne, Hawkins, Sanders, Malott

Chances of making the team:
Latta 95%

Everyone else < 5%
Anybody know if anyone I listed at SG is a PG or combo guard?

I liked Ally Malot in college but I am not sure she is going to make this team.

Bear in mind that, depending on who they keep, the Mystics could be restricted to 11 players by the salary cap. |

Malott and Taylor will be duking it out in camp. Which one can play SF on the second team? PF is well covered. With this team, it's not as much about hitting outside as it is about defense, since that is the weakness of the starters.

Morissette is a point guard. Simms was a point guard in college, but very turnover prone. Don't know if they want to fix that or move her to SG.

I think the SF position slightly favours Ally's current skill set, but the WNBA level of ability favours Taylor's level, so it will be interesting to see what happens there. I wasn't particularly inspired by what I saw from Malott down here in the WNBL this past season, whereas Asia seemed to be actively trying to adapt her game to be WNBA-SF-compatible.

agree. barring injuries her chance is probably way less than 50%. I just don't see it.

It would be a major surprise if either one made the team.

well there you have it. Malott may in fact make it then. She seems to be a good teammate and knows Mike's system, so assuming they keep 12, she could fit that 12th spot.
