The question is also if Tuck will ever be healthy. I think she's had knee issues like forever. (which is why - well, one of the reasons why, I thought taking her at #3 was a huge mistake). I'm looking forward to seeing a healthy Banham and also how JJ has progressed.

Here's an article that confirms my last post in this thread

http://www.norwichbulletin.com/sports/20170425/health-already-concern-for-connecticut-sun

Quote:
On the second day of Connecticut Sun training camp Tuesday, starting guard Alex Bentley sat in a chair courtside with her right foot encased in a walking boot.

Second-year forward Morgan Tuck, meanwhile, spent most of her time riding the stationary bike and getting some light reps as she worked on recovering from yet another recent procedure to her left knee.

If Tuck is already on a bike, I would think she might be ready for the start of the season if no setbacks. Wouldn't push her too hard. Put her in bubble wrap.

Quote:
“Just tweaked it,” Bentley said. “I will be all right in a few (days). It’s a minor thing.”

She said she expects to be ready for the season opener on May 13.

Quote:
Miller learned just before the WNBA draft that Tuck, who had season-ending surgery in September to repair cartilage, had to have a second procedure on her left knee to remove some debris.

“We’re happy with Morgan, considering that she had the procedure done just about 10 days ago (April 14). It’s good to have her back and she is way, way ahead of schedule. We’re going to be patient with her and make sure she is not rushing back,” Miller said.

Quote:
“We aren’t healthy enough from top to bottom to go with 11,” Miller said. “If we had 11 perfectly healthy players, we may have made a different decision. When you have an uncertainty with the health of your roster and with so many coming back from injuries, it was the right decision and (Ogwumike) supported it.”

Quote:
Rachel Banham, who underwent season-ending knee surgery prior to the end of her rookie season last year, was back on the floor working out. Allison Hightower, who has missed the last 2 ½ WNBA seasons and has played in four basketball games in the last two years — all overseas — also was back on the floor.

Quote:
The Sun also don’t have newly-acquired veteran Lynetta Kizer, free agent Danielle Adams or Kayla Pedersen, who is hoping to return after a year off, in camp yet. The three have not completed their European commitments.

Good. Now they can trade Chiney and Jasmine and get a real good pg. Smile

Tuck will probably prove to be a wasted pick as feared.

I'm most interested to see JJ's progress- seems like limitless ceiling there- and if Cooper can be as effective as I hope at the 3/4.

All 3 of these comments should be sent to Mr. Miller before the start of the season please Laughing

Like who though, Prahslis? Lure her out of retirement with a max contract? Smile

But seriously, who's gonna give up a really good PG?

If you don't have the #1 pick, you might consider drafting Mitchell.

Canada and Nurse might be available at top of the second round.

If you do get a "really good PG", don't forget to send Banham to MIN. We know what you got.

That was an unusual special situation. SAN's starting PG goes down with a fairly serious injury and they draft a PG they turn out to be happy with.

DRob isn't everybody's flavor
Pro's
Willing to take a charge
Won assist awards for a season or two

Cons
Never made a three in 5 years play
Easy to post up
Never brought team close to the promise land
Coming off fairly serious injury
Got replaced by a rookie PG

cthskzfn, does DRob fill your requirements?

How about Chiney for Faulkner plus some kicker?

or why would CT do that? Chiney at this point is a gamble. High risk. High reward. But her trade value isn't much ITM so I wouldn't think CT would trade her for a chunk of change.

Assuming the 'kicker' isn't too big, I'd do that in a heartbeat if I was Chicago. Faulkner's a backup point guard; Chiney's an All-Star post if and when she's healthy - absolutely worth the gamble.

Hamson standing out in a crowd for the Sun

http://www.theday.com/connecticut-sun/20170426/hamson-standing-out-in-crowd-for-sun

Quote:
“Without question the biggest surprise three days into camp is Jen Hamson,” Sun general manager and head coach Curt Miller said during Wednesday’s media day. “She’s completely changing and altering plays around the rim. She’s absolutely affecting plays on the defensive end and is a big, rolling target on the pick and roll. Her size has really impacted camp.

“She is in a big-time battle to steal a roster spot.”

Poor man's Griner

Quote:
“Defense has always been my favorite thing,” Hamson said. “Shot blocking especially. I just love it. The sense that you get when you stop somebody from scoring, it’s just great.”

Quote:
“I’m definitely on the skinny side, so physicality isn’t my strong point," Hamson said, "but I’ve learned to play to my advantages.”

Some cool media day pics in this article

I'm curious who's going to make this team. I think they need to have a 5th guard, just to guard against further injury bugs. Ditto in the post.

G:Bentley, JThomas,C Williams, Banham[one of Hightower, Faris, January]
SF:AThomas, [Stricklen or Cooper]
Posts: JJ, BJones, Kizer, Tuck, [one of Hamson, Gray, Pederson, Adams]

Is he talking up Hamson to keep her or to give her a chance to be picked up when he cuts her?

Unless Hightower looks like she's returning to her old form, I'm guessing Faris has the inside track at guard. I think Cooper has a lot of upside, but think Stricklen's shooting is maybe more important for this team, which won't have much outside shooting from the posts. The fifth post will be a specialist - defense from hamson, Rebounding from Gray, Pederson is more of a glue type player, and Adams for offense - so they'll really have a choice to make depending on what they think is most needed. Looked at like that, I think Hamson has a decent chance. Are any of the others worth a look by anybody else? Not sure. Seems marginal. If Hightower is dropped, she might be worth a pick up from someone who can afford to continue to let her get well. She was really surprisingly good when healthy.

I was going to point out Romero is suspended, but you were sneaky and already edited out.

January is a fairly easy cut, unless she's surprising, and they're not exactly writing about her.

I suspect Hightower vs Faris will be a tear-jerking decision for Miller. They came out with a huge Hightower article, so that might be indicative of what direction things are going.

If Miller is happy with both Gray and Hamson, he could slot Tuck at SF and maybe try to deal Stricklen to the hand-wringing Liberty.

Unusual for the first second rounder cut to come before the first third rounder

Cooper was the #13 pick in the draft. That's a spot where you expect a player who will make a roster. Leaving out the two times it was used for a foreigner who showed up later (Gruda in 2007 and Abdi in 2012), the #13 pick has made the roster as a rookie 83% of the time ( 15 of 18 ).

Just found out that Cooper started with fellow Georgetown freshman (and later fellow transfer student) Natalie Butler for the first two games of the 2013-14 season. And she was a high school teammate of Diamond DeShields.

I will. She looks like she's put on another 40 pounds in addition to the 40 over that she had in SAS. I wonder if it's a medical thing or that she just doesn't think she needs to lose.
