US men win the 4x100 free.

You gotta give Phelps some credit. Wow, he kicked ass and gave the US a lead in the second leg that they never relinquished.

I know we all get tired of hearing from and about him, but he is truly a remarkable athlete.

Honestly, I get tired of people complaining about hearing about him (or any other form of greatness).

The guy is incredible, and deserves all the attention given to him.

I've found someone new to cheer for - American Lilly King.

It's such a shameful scandal. The International Swimming Federation has at the last minute reversed field and reinstated a bunch of Russian swimmers who had failed drug tests, including Yulia Efimova who has flunked twice.

So when Efimova won her prelim in the 100 breaststroke (she was loudly booed by the crowd when she came out) she waved one finger in the air at the crowd. The cameras then showed King on the side watching and wagging her finger at Efimova. After King won the next prelim with the best overall time, the announcer asked her about it and she, without hesitation, answered "She was waving her finger in the air. When you've been caught taking drugs twice, I'm not a fan"

I will be rooting wholeheartedly for King in the final tomorrow night.

Oh, the fans loudly booed the Russian men's 4x100 free team too, and they finished off the podium in 4th place. US won the gold.

He does. And he's enthusiastic about it too.

Woooo! King puts the doping Russian in her place in the 100m Breaststroke. Last night she called out Efimova for having been caught doping (failed two drug tests), and tonight she backed it up by winning Gold.

Another American, Katie Meili took the Bronze in a bit of a surprise.

She did it. Lilly King won the Gold over the twice-caught-for-cheating-with -PEDs Russian.

Way to go Lilly. Now one of my favorite Olympians.

I haven't been following this story, but how is Efimova even at the Olympics?

Also, Phelps' face when that guy was being a dick in front of him.. Laughing Laughing I don't think I've ever seen him mad. But that was hilarious.

Good question. It's ridiculous, and it results in things like this Sad

Because after setting as a condition of reinstatement for the Russians that the athlete not have flunked a drug test, the Intl Swimming Federation went ahead and reversed course and at the last moment reinstated a whole bunch of Russians who had flunked multiple times. More than one of the known cheats have already won medals.

I assume some Federation executives are driving new Ferraris and Porsches this week and giving their mistresses new diamond necklaces.

Basically other than the track team (so far anyhow) it seems the only Russian who is barred from the Olympics is the woman 800m runner who blew the whistle on the steroid scheme. All the federations and commissions turned down her appeals do she can't race but Efimova can.

Ain't the Olympics great? Rolling Eyes

Clearly Bob Bowman deserves most of the credit...

With 12 Gold Medals, Phelps has tied a 2168 year old Olympic Record. Leonidas of Rhodes set the record for first place finishes back in 152 BCE.

Is this just individual? I thought he had 22?

Also, I'm loving watching Phelps. And this isn't meant to be against him at all.

But the next time someone asks Diana Taurasi if USA dominance is bad for women's basketball, she should say she'll answer that question after it's asked to Michael Phelps.

Yes, Individual wins.

Who, What, Why: Who was Leonidas of Rhodes?

Bear in mind that records of the ancient Olympics are spotty at best

Actually the Greeks were obsessed with documentation of the events, so the historical record of the ancient olympics is very reliable. In fact, because it was so well documented, the four year segments are often used by historians to try and date other historical events that occurred in relation to them.

Reliable, but much of it is missing. Less than a quarter of ancient Olympic champions are known.
