That's a good point. Chris Hansen, survivor, stated on Nancy Grace that he thinks it impossible that there was only one shooter. His reasoning was based off the rhythm of the shots. Nancy Grace then played the audio of when the shots began. What Chris said made sense. Also, I don't think the police had reached the venue yet.

I saw a report earlier that there was an armed, off-duty police officer there who exchanged gun fire with the shooter.

I'd think the media is handling this the best way they know how. "Outings" are sorta irrelevant here: it's people, HUMANS that were murdered. Period. Any subsequent surprises are just moot.

I'm just sick about this. I physically feel ill and cannot even imagine how the people in the local communities are coping.
I've been starting to read a book that's central thesis is about the cooperative versus dominator models of society, that we used to be a cooperative society, but the dominator model has been ascendant for a couple of millennia. I think one of the points made in the introduction was that some sociologists think humanity is moving towards the cooperative model, particularly with the advent of technology, etc., but that those who have the power under the dominator model are becoming crazed about this, raving about the destruction of the building blocks of society, etc. There's so much fear and hate out there, and it's gleefully used by those in power to manipulate people, to say that their way of life/thinking is "right" and others are "wrong".
Anyway, I don't know what the solution is. You could ban new sales of AR-15s, or perhaps high-capacity mags? But there are so many out there already, so would that help. Banning the ownership of AR-15s seems as useful to me as deporting all immigrants: an expensive and logistical nightmare that might make a difference? I can see why it's the gun of choice: it looks scary and it's the best-selling rifle in the US. Easy to get. Easy to intimidate with. And I don't know whether any of the more recently proposed gun control measures would have stopped the legal sale in this instance.
I think the most useful thing would be for Congress to fund gun research. I know the NRA has successfully lobbied against that, and I even understand the fear from their side that biased studies will be the result, but that possibility would be worth the information gathered, one would hope. |
HIPPA regulation re: privacy waived for Orlando victims.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2016/06/13/orlando-shooting-why-the-white-house-hipaa-waiver-is-important-for-gay-rights/
City Mayor Buddy Dyer announced early the next morning that the issue was being addressed in an unusual way — by the granting of a HIPPA waiver by the White House to Orlando Regional Medical Center, the area's only level 1 trauma hospital, where many of the victims were being treated. This was possible because there's a clause in the law that allows the secretary of health and human services to waive portions in certain exceptional situations.

What was the killer's motivation? The same thing that almost always motivates these guys: FEAR.
Killing = cowardice

This was an event that had me worrying about my country from the moment I heard about it. But I was worried that the outrage and sympathy would be diminished from what we would see in a different scenario due to the nature of the victims, something I'm still very worried about. But this from this preacher?
If someone had told me the next really mass shooting would be an attack on a gay bar I think my eyes glazing over would have been hard to hide. Let alone the idea of a lone wolf Islamic extremist attacking a gay bar and killing 49 people. This shooter wasn't some diabolical genius. But hate, I guess, can be and I would suggest this mass killing of 49 people in a gay bar as proof. This is an attack that pulls a thread that begins to undo the fabric of tolerance and progress that has taken decades to build and even with that we were in a precarious state of divided acceptance anyway._________________ Every woman who has ever been presented with a career/sex quid pro quo in the entertainment industry should come forward and simply say, “Me, too.” - jammer The New York Times 10/10/17 |

Mateen worked as a security guard for G4S and had hoped to become a law enforcement officer, and former classmates at a police academy said he was socially awkward and apparently gay himself.
“We went to a few gay bars with him, and I was not out at the time, so I declined his offer,” said one former classmate at Indian River Community College.
The classmate said Mateen was not out, either, and other students felt sorry for him.
“He just wanted to fit in and no one liked him,” the classmate said. “He was always socially awkward.”
His father, Seddique Mir Mateen, has apologized for his son’s actions but said “God will punish those involved in homosexuality,” saying that was not a matter for humans to undertake.
The elder vehemently denied his son was gay.
“If he was gay, why would he do something like this?” Seddique Mateen asked.
Mateen married a woman he met online about eight years ago, and the couple had a son, but they divorced because he allegedly became abusive.
“He was not a stable person,” his ex-wife said. |

Orlando Shooter's Father: God Will Punish Those Involved With Homosexuality
As CBS News reports, Seddique Mir Mateen said on Monday that his son was wrong to massacre 50 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando because “God will punish those involved in homosexuality” and it is “not an issue that humans should deal with.”
On Sunday, the elder Mateen apologized on behalf of his family for what his son had done while maintaining that he was shocked that Omar Mateen would commit such an atrocity.
“We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren’t aware of any action he is taking,” Mir Seddique said. “We are in shock like the whole country.”
In some ways, Mir Seddique Mateen’s views on homosexuality mirror those of Islamic scholar Farrokh Sekaleshfar, who condemned Omar Mateen’s murderous rampage on the grounds that the government should be killing gay people instead of vigilantes.
Sekaleshfar gave a talk at the Husseini Islamic Center just outside Orlando just weeks ago where he said that the sentence for people who are found guilty of homosexuality should be death.
So... wow. Religion. Again. So how many people attended this 'talk' at the Husseini Islamic Center? How widespread is this kind of thinking among American Muslims? I'm just asking. _________________ Every woman who has ever been presented with a career/sex quid pro quo in the entertainment industry should come forward and simply say, “Me, too.” - jammer The New York Times 10/10/17 |

Orlando Gunman Threatened to Bring a Gun to School and Kill Everyone
Former classmates of the Orlando terrorist who killed at least 49 people in a gay night club Sunday allege that the man once threatened to bring a gun to school and murder his classmates when he was in the fifth grade.
TMZ interviewed former classmate Leslie Hall, who said that the man “told a group of kids at Mariposa Elementary he was going to bring a gun to school and kill everyone.” She said that no one took it as a joke at the time and classmates immediately told their teacher. He was then suspended for two weeks.
She told TMZ that the violent tendencies continued through middle school when other classmates witnessed him throwing chairs and spitting at teachers.
In another interview, Hall told the New York Daily News, “Omar even as a kid had issues and always caused problems in school and hated women.” She added, “We sat next to him in classes and were bullied for years and nothing was done. Now this.”
Former classmates have said in previous reports that he bragged about Osama bin Laden being his uncle after the attacks on 9/11. His father made similar claims on videos.
The classmates now all agreed there were warning signs at an early age and wished that more had been done to discipline or counsel him._________________ Every woman who has ever been presented with a career/sex quid pro quo in the entertainment industry should come forward and simply say, “Me, too.” - jammer The New York Times 10/10/17 |

Janet Jackson shares video honoring victims of Orlando nightclub attack
Quote: |
Musicians including Lady Gaga, Adele, and Dixie Chicks have paid tribute to the victims of Sunday's mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub, and on Tuesday, Janet Jackson shared a video honoring those affected by the tragedy.
Set to "Shoulda Known Better," off the singer's 2015 album Unbreakable, the video includes photos of the victims and clips of Barack Obama speaking about the need for gun control. An avid Jackson fan named Lamont Hicks initially posted the video on Monday, before Jackson herself shared it via Twitter with the caption "You'll never be forgotten. #WeAreOrlando #Unbreakable."
Early Sunday morning, a gunman attacked the popular Orlando gay nightclub Pulse, killing 49 people and wounding 53 others. |
