This is why ESPN gives so many games to the Lynx.

ESPN3 isn't quite the same as being on the national broadcast.

And I am sure the Phoenix Mercury had a lot to do with high ratings.

The Lynx did win the title last year so I don't have a problem with that. However, I am certain that many fans tuned in bevause Diana was returning along with Penny. I am not surprised that so many tuned in, plus it was the only game that was on tv.

That's true. So let's just look at the games on ESPN and ESPN2. Games on ESPN3 are listed in parentheses.

Minnesota: 6 (0)
LA: 5 (0)
Phoenix: 4 (2)
Indiana: 3 (3)
Dallas: 3 (3)
Chicago: 2 (2)
NY: 2 (3)
Atlanta: 1 (4)
Seattle: 1 (3)
Connecticut: 0 (4)
San Antonio: 0 (7)
Washington: 0 (5)

Did they make these TV decisions based on star power/popularity, or are they based on predicted competitiveness?

Minnesota has 4 (USA) Olympians and 6 TV games.
Phoenix has 2 Olympians and 4 games.
Seattle has 2 Olympians and only 1 game.
Indiana has 1 Olympian and 3 games.
NY has 1 Olympian and 2 games.
Chicago has 1 Olympian and 2 games.
Atlanta has 1 Olympian and 1 game.
LA has 0 Olympians and 5 games!
Dallas has 0 Olympians and 3 games.
Connecticut has 0 Olympians and 0 games.
San Antonio has 0 Olympians and 0 games.
Washington has 0 Olympians and 0 games.

I don't know where to ask this so I'll put it in here...

Why aren't there any games today? Two days of games for the opening days and then two days of nothing. It sorta kills momentum.

the first few weeks of the season, most games will take place on the weekend with few games during the week. Has to do with kids still in school, NBA play-offs, possibly lack of arena availability(NBA, NHL play-offs). Some arenas close of certain dates if there team appears to go far into the NBA or NHL play-offs. Remember that year the Lakers, Clippers & Kings were all in the play-offs? Staples Center was basically unavailable for 2-3 straight weeks. Connecticut, Seattle, Chicago & Dallas don't have this issue to deal with, but the other 8 teams do.

There are plenty of week day games this week though. And none of those four teams who don't share facilities are playing today when they could be playing today -- and for some unknown reason Chicago is playing a 12:30 afternoon game against Minnesota tomorrow.

WNBA never plays games on Monday. It's like a sacred day to the league.

It's "School Day". Early games like this almost always revolve around bussing in kids on field trips to watch the games. Prepare to hear thousands of kids screaming at the top of their lungs. Everybody's favorite games of the year.

I guess I will use this thread for average viewership of all national TV games. Numbers are usually taken from sportstvratings.com

If a game is nationally and locally simulcast, only the national channel ratings are included.

5/14 Phoenix vs Minnesota ESPN 505,000

The number is less impressive taking into account that it was lower than the SEC Softball Championship before it, but apparently a very good result relative to usual ESPN games.

I was only counting USA Olympians. I put it for Minnesota (above in parentheses) but left it off for the rest that followed. It is harder to make the USA team so I was only counting them. Neither Ana nor Natalie even start for their WNBA teams, but all the USA Olympians do.

I think it's most likely based on the ratings last year.

Remember these are the national broadcast ratings only. Those who watch their local broadcast are not included (figures are also too small to be meaningful):

5/21 San Antonio vs Dallas NBATV 30,000
5/22 Chicago vs Atlanta NBATV 63,000

My bad I didn't know you were talking only US ones. Cp3 must have been talking about US Oympians when she told espn LA had no Oympians too.

Parker probably doesn't know who all is on other countries' Olympic teams.
