Amanda Kessel, concussion-free, set to return to Minnesota lineup

Woke up to this news today. So excited!

Kessel was arguably the best woman's hockey player in the world, having led the Gophers to the first perfect season in College hockey history, when she suffered a concussion just before the Sochi Olympics. She played in the games but afterward she had a return of the post-concussion symptoms and was never able to get right. This was her last year of college eligibility and so officially "retired" before the start of the season.

Now she is back! So happy for her, and happy for the Gophers. Without her the Gophers were ranked 3rd in the country with a 24-3-0 record and were seen as a decent pick to win their 4th Championship in 5 years (and 6th overall since 2001 when the NCAA first held a tourney). Adding one of the best in the game to that potent roster should make them the presumptive favorites again.

She got GWH above the fold on the front page of the Star Tribune's sports section.

Two goals (the 99th and 100th of her college career) in Friday's 4-0 win over the stinkin' Badgers:

Kessel with the hat trick to send the Gophers to the Frozen Four--for the 5th consecutive season.

Kessel scores the tying goal in an eventual overtime victory for the Gophers, taking down Wisconsin.

Gophers in the National Title game for the 5th straight season. Next up: undefeated Boston College, and reigning Patty Kazmaier winner Alex Carpenter, on Sunday.

Should be a great one.

And the Gophers win, beating the previously perfect Boston College 3-1.

It is their 6th NCAA Championship (7th total National Championship), a Women's College Hockey record.

Amanda Kessel scored the game winning goal late in the 3rd period and was named to the All-Tournament team.

Freshman Sarah Potomak, who scored the overtime winner on Friday and scored the opening goal today 13 seconds in, was named the Tournament's Most-Outstanding Player! Before the Tournament, Potomak had also been named the nation's top Freshman by the NCAA. So the future continues to look bright for the premier program in women's collegiate hockey.

ARGGGGHHHH!

Boston College is only competitive in hockey and still "we" come up short.

Hell of a season still, but that title would've been nice.

It was one hell of a game. Both goaltenders stood on their heads. The top two offenses in the league (both with unreal power play units) and the score was 1-0 late in the third.

Hella impressed with BC. It's going to sting, being so close and all, but ultimately they should look back on their season with pride. It was one of the all-time greats. And they went blow for blow with a dynasty.

I feel like we finally got that epic UM/BC battle that has been teased over the last few years. A couple of bounces go the other way and the result could have easily been different.

Nice write-up in the New York Times about Kessel and the Gophers' championship:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/21/sports/hockey/minnesota-amanda-kessel-ncaa-championship.html

Quote:
Kessel made her return on Feb. 5. An already powerful program was rejoined by one of the greats of the game just in time for the late-season push.

It was kind of like getting a slugger at the trade deadline, Frost said.

It is pretty clear between this, how they set up the draws for the tournament, and a thousand other little (and big) things, that the NCAA does not really care about Women's College Hockey. It is an afterthought to them.
