After playing truly uninspired and just downright depressing basketball in losing the first of two games to the previously unbeaten Mystics (ssshh, don't let VeProf know the Mystics were undefeated), the Farmington 4th grade Sparks returned to their bread and butter defense and rebounding and won a barnburner in game two 31-27.
In game one, the Sparks played probably their worst game of the season, as they appeared to be somewhat intimidated by the three stars attack of the Mystics (somehow they ended up with three of the best players in the league on one team). A rousing between game pep talk by coach dts helped them realize that basketball is basketball regardless of the opponent.
It didn't hurt their confidence when Dani woke up from her first game funk (zero points) and put in the first 6 points of the second game. As with most teams, the "star" may not need to light it up, but it sure boosts the confidence of the other players when they see it start to happen. The Sparks immediately "lightened up" and played their game. After playing to a 27-27 tie through the first 3 1/2 quarters, the Sparks defense did not allow another point for the rest of the game, while Dani iced the game with a driving layup and a short jumper.
With two weeks to go (assuming we make up a snow game) the Sparks have been very impressive, losing only two games, both to the same Mystics they finally dispatched yesterday.
