i love that flick, stever! i'd forgotten all about it.

i think it's funny that back in the late '80s - when usa today was still in its infancy, derided within its industry as "McPaper" even as most newspapers tried to mimic it - usat's parent company gannett had a corporate-wide project under way to forecast and get on top of the next wave of information delivery. among the conclusions was that news - and, more important, advertising - could be tailored to the individual consumer. and that, rather than a group of news editors deciding what was "news" on a daily basis and delivering it based on their profound judgment, a full inventory of news could be served up to allow the consumer to pick and choose what s/he wanted. at the time, those ideas were pure heresy. there's an amazing revolution going on in newsrooms across america, and the dreaded word is "convergence."
