Please excuse my ignorance. I have noticed that recently there are a number of young players with this name spelled Aaliyah or Aliyah. Is there a particular reason?
I ask because aliyah (usually pronounced slightly differently: a-LEE-ah) means going up in Hebrew. It can refer to making a blessing for the Torah (scripture) reading or to immigrating to Israel. Is there another meaning associated with the name?

I'm guessing it's because of the popular singer about 20 years ago. Those babies are just now arriving at college.
She was killed in a plane crash around that time. I'm guessing that a lot of parents got the name from her.

I mean, then the next logical question becomes "what made her parents choose that name?" which we might not necessarily know.

Aaliyah is an Arabic name meaning exalted or, archaically, high born

I wonder if the Arabic name and the Hebrew word come from the same root, then. They're both in the same language family.
