The semi-final match last night drew a 2015 record of 9.08 million viewers. I can only imagine Sunday's final at 7pm EST might shatter the 1999 Final record of 17.9 million.

Yuck. American soccer fans are especially sensitive to own goals since the Andrés Escobar incident. I doubt Bassett will get that treatment, but let's hope she gets a chance at redemption someday.

Heartbreaking. Terrible. Unfortunate. That shouldn't be the way a great semifinal match should end. But it did and hopefully it just gives England more determination to build upon for the 2019 WWC.

I feel for the player that score in her own goal but can't say I'm mad Japan won. England coach accuse Canada of getting some homecooking calls in World Cup Rolling Eyes Bet he wasn't complain about that Pk after his player flop tho.It only seems right that they don't win on Canada Day

Now we got a rematch of that classic comeback game in 2011 by Japan. Honestly speaking I'm hoping Japan win the finals only because I don't want US to win in our country. I was rooting for Team US in last WC but after the London Olympic I can't support after Alex Morgan broke my heart.

England won the third place game today, 1-0, thanks to a last minute PK in stoppage time. This was England's best finish in a WWC.

Women's World Cup: bigger, better – but still treated as the poor relation

Quote:
It’s not just in the prize money where a difference can be seen in how Fifa approaches the women’s version of its top tournament.

As USA was getting ready for a crucial semi-final against Germany this week, they were a little closer to their opponent than they would’ve liked: USA coach Jill Ellis said she almost walked into Germany’s meal room her first day in Montreal. That’s because the teams were sharing facilities next to each other, something that has been happening at every stage of the tournament.

“It is not up to the times. Two teams that are supposed to play against each other shouldn’t be sharing a hotel,” said Germany coach Silvia Neid. “For us, it was difficult having just won against Sweden, and Sweden was pretty sad – we still had to share the elevator with them. You play against each other but you constantly run into each other in the hotel and that shouldn’t happen.”

That’s not the case for the men’s World Cup. During the tournament, Fifa assigns them hotels that are separate from their opponents. Before the tournament starts, teams get their pick of luxury hotels to serve as a base camp with a training field where teams can stay in between games. Such a base camp setup wouldn’t make sense in a massive country like Canada, which spans across five time zones, but Fifa didn’t offer basecamps for the women four years ago in Germany, a country smaller than Texas.

In the final? No. In fact no team had ever scored more than 2 goals total in the final.

I came home from the Dream game and tuned into this and looked at it and thought "wow that court is huge" Smile

Glad that own goal turned out not to be a problem.

"Among the many happy images to come out of the July 5 USA win over Japan in the women’s soccer World Cup final is that of Abby Wambach running to the sidelines to kiss her wife Sarah Huffman in celebration." click to see it
