I guess they are on the comeback. Luxury cruise ships are easy targets. They need their own pirates for protection

Well I know from reading Yacht Magazine, that pirate attacks are in fact not uncommon. But what surprised me about this one is that they actually attacked a whole cruise ship! Shocked And a pretty big one too!

Usually they stick to ~100ft private boats sailed by only a few people. However, 'The Seabourn Spirit' is a 450ft multi-deck Cruise Ship with a professional security force onboard Exclamation Arrow

The crew of a cruise ship attacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia used a sonic weapon to help ward off the attackers, the Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line said Monday.


The device blasts earsplitting noise in a directed beam.

The Seabourn Spirit escaped Saturday's attack also by shifting to high speed and changing course, the cruise line said.

The sonic device, known as a Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, is a so-called "non-lethal weapon" developed for the military after the 2000 attack on the USS Cole in Yemen as a way to keep operators of small boats from approaching U.S. warships.



Well, for a starting price of $11,000 a person, you sure get your money's worth! Shocked Exclamation I'll never complain about ordering a 12-dollar Piña Colada again...
