But my comment wasn't about who's dingus was longer. I was responding to the post that suggested that P5 elite teams needed to schedule a weak OOC schedule to give themselves a break from their tough conference games later in the season. I stand by my comment that there are plenty of weak sisters in all the P5 conferences to allow for that. The SEC has 11 teams outside the RPI top 25 and 8 above 50. Any team that feels the need to play it's starters for long minutes against any team outside the top 50 is NOT an elite team. |
I wouldn't say that P5 teams should schedule weak OOC opponents (and not just because that would make me enjoy the season less), but I think it's fair to say that it's more important for UConn to schedule a strong OOC because it plays a lot more weak teams.
|
UConn has 18 conference games. 4 of those are against USF, who is better than all but 3 SEC teams, and Tulane, who beat LSU last year who finished 6th in the SEC. That leaves 14 games against bad teams. Tenn plays SC, Ken., and ???? The rest are weak. Maybe stronger than the AAC but I doubt UConn would need to play their starters more than a half against any of them. Last year against Vandi, UConn won by 39 in a game where Stewart played 22 minutes and Jefferson 23.
I agree that UConn needs to schedule elite OOC games but so do all elite teams, no matter what conference they are in |
In the AAC, the UConn schedule works out to 2 games against an RPI top 25 team, 2 games against an RPI 26-50 team, 2 games against an RPI 51-100 team, 4 games v. RPI 100-199 teams and 8 games against RPI 200+ teams. In the SEC, Tennessee played 3 games against RPI top 25 teams, 3 games against RPI 26-50 teams, 7 games against RPI 51-100 teams and 3 games against RPI 101-199 teams. In conference, Tennessee played as many games against RPI top 50 teams as UConn played against RPI top 100 teams (despite playing 2 fewer conference games), and less than half as many games against RPI 100-199 teams as UConn played against RPI 200+ teams. And, of course, Tennessee had multiple conference games against top 10 teams, while UConn had none.
I certainly agree that WCBB is more top-heavy than MCBB, and that upset chances go down pretty rapidly as you move down the ranks of opponents, but it seems to me that you're understating the impact of playing against teams in the RPI top 50, in particular. Those are games where upsets can occur, even against pretty good opponents. |
You insist on using RPI as your standard. RPI has an inherent bias that has been shown to favor major conference teams. It totally ignores MOV so a one point win in triple OT counts as much as a 40 point blowout. It's been demonstrated that a team can go winless over a season and still get a top 50 RPI if they schedule carefully.
And I think I could count on one hand the number of teams ranked 45-55 who beat a top 5 team (not top 5 RPI) in the last several years, which is who we are talking about.
And once again I don't deny that UConn must go outside the AAC to find more than a few competitive teams (to them). My point is that every elite team is on the same ship, just in a somewhat better cabin. Notre Dame has been in the ACC for 2 seasons. In their first they went undefeated with an average MOV of about 22 points. Last year they lost a single game during the Reimer incident. That's one loss in 2 years. Hardly what I call competitive. And the ACC has more decent teams than any of the P5.

Gulf Coast Showcase Bracket is as follows.
Dayton
Maine
Stanford
Missouri State
Louisville
Marist
LSU
Purdue
Stanford and Louisville seem destined to meet for the first time in the storied history of both programs. Unless Marist can play the role of Cinderella.

When Husky football is worth talking about then you'll have a chance. |
Which is about more than the quality of the team, which is the real issue - conferences are reasonably asking what they're going to get in terms of help with TV contracts these days.
In practice, I think UConn is stuck in the AAC until the next round of conference poaching, and its fate is largely dependent on whether the SEC or B12 steals a team or two from the ACC.

Pretty similar to last years schedule. The big step up is the preseason NIT with a potential matchup with Baylor. I love that Bruno wants to play against the best.

Wow.
What a juxtaposition. DePaul's serious schedule followed immediately by Auburn's embarrassing joke.

Well they have different situations. DePaul's conference isn't that strong, while Auburn gets to play South Carolina, Tennessee, etc. in conference. DePaul's coach has job security, Auburn's coach needs wins.

Fri. Nov. 13 at UC Davis Davis, Calif. TBD -
Sun. Nov. 15 at Gonzaga Spokane, Wash. TBD -
Sat. Nov. 21 George Washington Stanford, Calif. TBD -
Mon. Nov. 23 Santa Clara Stanford, Calif. TBD -
Fri. Nov. 27 vs. Missouri State # Estero, Fla. 10:30 a.m. -
Sat. Nov. 28 vs. Dayton or Maine # Estero, Fla. TBD -
Sun. Nov. 29 TBD # Estero, Fla. TBD -
Sun. Dec. 13 at Texas Austin, Texas TBD -
Wed. Dec. 16 Tennessee Stanford, Calif. TBD -
Sat. Dec. 19 Cornell Stanford, Calif. TBD -
Tues. Dec. 22 CSU Bakersfield Stanford, Calif. TBD -
Mon. Dec. 28 Chattanooga Stanford, Calif. TBD
A bit underwhelming if you ask me. Okay, there's the chance of Louisville in the tournament. Tennessee and Texas are both on there with a few mid-major powers in GW, Chatty, and the usual Gonzaga. I guess my general dissatisfaction is that there's no East Coast swing coming to a place near me.

Not a very ambitious OOC schedule. Nice back to backs at Stanford and OSU in December. At Notre Dame. In-conference home and homes vs. Vandi and Arkansas? Why doesn't the SEC schedule Tenn & SC to play twice?

Not a very ambitious OOC schedule. Nice back to backs at Stanford and OSU in December. At Notre Dame. In-conference home and homes vs. Vandi and Arkansas? Why doesn't the SEC schedule Tenn & SC to play twice? |
IMO it's decent to excellent: #2 Notre Dame, #13 Oregon St., #14 Stanford, #22 Texas, plus Chattanooga & Syracuse which just missed the final top 25 rankings (26th and 31st respectively). But they only play USC, UK, Miss. St., and TAMU a total of 4 times, while USC for example play UT, UK, Miss. St., and TAMU a total of 6 times. They play the bottom 4 SEC teams - the 4 that had overall losing seasons (Vanderbilt, Florida, Alabama, & Auburn) a total of 6 times, compared to USC playing them a total of 4 times. UT has the easier SEC schedule.....

I see one top 10 game on their OOC schedule and one on their conference schedule. I sat and watched in Albany as No 22 Texas got beat 105-54 last season. The drop off in teams ranked below 15th in wcbb is huge.

The SEC schedule rotates. Last season Tennessee played Kentucky twice. This year once. Last year Georgia twice. This year once. The time is coming where they'll get South Carolina twice.
I disagree on the OOC schedule. I think it's a nice mix of tough games and cupcakes. December is going to be a tough month with Oregon State and Stanford on the road. That month will get them ready for conference play.

The west coast trip will be challenging. But as far as getting them ready for their SEC schedule, they don't play a meaningful SEC game till January 25th. They'll have 4 weak conference opponents and Notre Dame before then.

They don't make the SEC schedule. And just WHEN does UConn have a meaningful AAC game? Ever?

I didn't say they did. I only pointed out that their early conference games weren't very challenging. Why is it that LV fans see their team as a likely one seed and FF team but then try to say that games against weak conference teams are "tough"?
As far as the AAC and meaningful games, UConn will have two and probably 3 games against S Fla. and of all the teams in the SEC, only Tenn and SC went further in the NCAA's. And USF actually managed to beat Chattanooga last year. But in any case that has nothing to do with the depth of the SEC.
I look at Tenn's entire schedule and see 2 games against last year's top 10. UConn has 4.
