(the series against New Zealand commences on August 15)

(Great effort, BA. I only had to fix incorrect spelling of 4 of the 18 players' names. You're improving! Razz ) #PetPeeve

What happened to Jenna O'Hea? I thought she was supposed to be back the Opals in 2015.

The squad above is purely for the camp that is in a couple of weeks.
Jenna and some others are still active in Europe.

14 of the 18 play in Melbourne or its suburbs. Maybe we should call it the Basketball Mecca of Oz.

Melbourne is definitely the heartland of basketball in Australia.
I think you're stretching the definition of a suburb just a little though Wink Bendigo is just under 100 miles from Melbourne.

Does this mean that L. Mitchell is not on the team, or not on the team in 2015?

It literally just means that she is not attending this particular camp, but to me it also implies that she has made a commitment to the full WNBA season and therefore would not be participating in the Opals Olympic qualifying series against NZ either.
I'd guess that it doesn't do too much harm to her chances of going to Rio next year. There is a lot of basketball to be played between now and then, and the Opals never set their team in stone too far in advance. Joyce has seen her in action plenty so far in the WNBL and with his Opals squads. If she can have a good WNBA season I think it will only strengthen her 2016 chances.

http://pickandroll.com.au/the-road-to-rio-opals-squad-april-2015/

Joyce mentions the WNBA CBA and the unlikelyhood of them being able to secure the services of the WNBA-committed players.

The other thing this article references is the availability of Jackson and Cambage for the August games. Both are rehabbing injuries currently and were doubtful for the WNBA season. The article suggests they'd be on schedule for an August return and therefore not ready for the WNBA.

The Penny Taylor comment caught my eye. I know many folks around here were assuming she was not playing in PHX this summer, sounds like he's expecting she will. This also raises the possibility that LJ and Liz could show up towards the end of the season. Both could be back for the final eight games of the regular season.

The Penny Taylor wasn't really his comment though
Quote:
That means that squad members including Rebecca Allen and Cayla Francis will likely miss the New Zealand series, joining other Australian stars such as Penny Taylor and Erin Phillips who will all be expected to suit up for the respective teams in the WNBA.

Penny Taylor is an unrestricted free agent, has there been any indication she is going to sign with Phoenix or another team or is the writer just assuming she is going to play since she played last season.

I'd be fairly sure it's just an assumption on the author's part.
He has taken Phoenix & Penny's total silence on the subject to mean that the status quo has not changed, whereas I've interpreted it to mean "Umm, no WNBA for me. I'm like umm chilling out on the beach this umm summer"

If she's going to be in the Northern Hemisphere anyway, she might as well play

I was going to start a completely different thread at some point, but I guess I will just put this here.

The lack of Angela Marino is interesting.

Megan Craig resurfaces. I was surprised she decided to graduate early from Albany and skip her senior year. It should be a fun match-up between her and Cambage. Not quite Lizzie and Brittney, but still it's not every day you see two 6-8 players go head-to-head.

Oh Liz...

Australian centre Liz Cambage has been ruled out of the Opals' Rio Olympic qualifying series after choosing to attend a music festival rather than the first day of training camp.
