It looks like the WNBA is finally going to blow into the Windy City.

The league announced Wednesday that NBA Commissioner David Stern will headline a news conference Tuesday at the UIC Pavilion. It is widely expected that he will announce plans for an expansion team to be placed in Chicago in time for the 2006 season. The team would likely play its home games at the Pavilion, located on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Of course, the WNBA hasn't yet let on who might be involved in the ownership of a Chicago team, but word has it that a group of real estate investors from the city have shown great interest in the past.

But, overall, the WNBA has been able to weather the turmoil and continues to discuss further expansion. Outgoing WNBA president Val Ackerman, who is retiring this month to spend more time with her family, has said that it is likely the WNBA will expand at least twice by 2007.

Expected to join Stern for next week's announcement will be former Stevenson High School star Tamika Catchings of the WNBA's Indiana Fever and other WNBA players such as Ruth Riley, Lindsay Whalen and Tangela Smith.
