I was watching Oregon St vs Washington, so I missed this game. Hopefully, I can watch it later. Judging from the boxscore, it looks like playing without a real PG and C finally caught of with SEQ.

Hopefully they've found some extra bandwidth and it works better than last weekend's effort. The fact that they're promoting the link gives me some hope that things will be better.

WNBL Grand Final Game 1 - Perth Lynx vs Townsville Fire

... tips off here in Perth at 7pm local time (that is 7 hours from the time of this post).
Our first home playoff game since 2000. Quite a drought.

(although so far in the playoffs those links have all ended up changing at game time, so if it doesn't work, check the WNBL YouTube page for an updated link)

Top-notch broadcast for this one. Tied at 18 after one quarter and it's almost exclusively Batkovic vs. Laney thus far...

Cayla George (Francis) has been horrible in this game. You can better put her on the bench because she is a liability on both ends today.

That was a disastrous 4th quarter for Perth: one basket at the 7:53 mark and then 15 straight misses to finish the game...

Huge game by Opals captain Nat Burton, 3pts 1reb for the game.

Kept Suzy Batkovic to just 25pts 9reb.

Opals captain? Do you know something we don't, TheSponge? Wait ... are you Brendan Joyce? Surprised

Very un-Lynx-like game. I didn't feel the usual intensity from them, aside from Betnijah, who was keeping us in it almost single-handedly in the early stages.
Townsville switched up their D to leave Mijovic guarded by 3s most of the night and we did nothing to exploit it.

Playoff experience definitely came into play too I thought. Lynx hit the panic button way too early once the Fire hit the lead in the 4th. We really chucked up some crap.

And yes the less said about Burton's game the better. She had an absolute stinker.

Perth 57 (Whitcomb 20 & 5, Laney 19 & 14, Lavey 8 & 7)
Townsville 73 (Batkovic 25 & 9, Cocks 15, 8 & 5, Novosel 9, George 8 & 12, Gallagher 8 & 5)

No criticism of the WNBL intended ... the top players are very good, very skilled and have worked hard to get where they are.

But I think the all-star list shows just how strong the WNBA really is.

Leilani Mitchell (Adelaide Lightning): Decent WNBA player, probably best suited as a backup PG for a good team

Sami Whitcomb (Perth Lynx): Will be 28 in July, averaged 13 ppg as a senior at Washington, undrafted, got cut by the Sky in training camp.

Katie-Rae Ebzery (Sydney Uni Flames): A 26-year-old who I know nothing about. Has never played outside Australia.

Kelsey Griffin (Bendigo Spirit): Nice rotation player in WNBA.

Suzy Batkovic (Townsville Fire): The MVP and certainly would be a major contributor and likely a starter in the WNBA. But I can't ever see her even in the discussion for MVP, and an unlikely all-star at this point in her career.

Again, the point here isn't to criticize the WNBL, but to point out just how good the WNBA is compared to other pro leagues.

I don't imagine anyone was planning to argue that the WNBL was at a comparable level to the WNBA. Wink I think you're probably being kind to Suzy too, calling her a likely WNBA starter. Competent post players thrive here because it is not a "big" league. It's a place where tweeners un-tween, which is why Griffin, Bishop & Hodges do so well here compared to at the top level.

With a bit of luck you might get to see Ebzery in Rio. A very good SG, but with the size of a PG.

She is listed at 5-10, 154 lbs. Maybe she grew while you weren't looking. Wink

I'm just going by the eye test. She's fairly slight in build too.
I was talking more in a WNBA context ... she's more than fine here in the WNBL ... but you're right I'm probably being too picky.

Townsville 80 (Novosel 18 & 5, Batkovic 16 & 16, Murray 16, George 13, Cocks 13)
Perth 70 (Laney 16 & 5, Mijovic 16 & 5, Whitcomb 15 & 10, Lavey 10 & 8 )
Boxscore
YouTube

Finals MVP: Micaela Cocks

Similar to game 1 in a lot of ways. Townsville looked the better team for the first half but without really translating it to the scoreboard, Perth made a good run in the 3rd to take the lead and the momentum, and then Townsville shut down Perth in the 4th.
4th quarter of game 1 was 28-7
4th quarter tonight was 23-9

They've got a very good team up in Townsville. That's back-to-back WNBL titles for them.
