Proposed markets of Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Indianapolis & Pittsburgh are all interested.

Investors trying to bring an NWSL expansion team to Atlanta are moving forward based on a recent season ticket drive to gauge interest in the team. The Atlanta Vibe has been mentioned as a possible team name. Atlanta had two previous women's pro soccer teams called the Atlanta Beat. The first Atlanta Beat team was part of all three seasons (2001-03) in the Women's United Soccer Association, while the second Atlanta Beat team played the final two seasons (2010-11) of the three seasons played by the league called Women's Professional Soccer. Other groups in Indianapolis, Salt Lake City and Pittsburgh have expressed interest in an NWSL expansion franchise. The NWSL started play in 2013 with eight teams and grew to nine teams last season with the addition of the expansion team called the Houston Dash. [from oursportscentral.com]

Atlanta VIBE? How did that one get past the radar?! Shocked

I mean Women's soccer is so kid friendly they forced the name change of Scream LOL (Guess they didn't want fans dressed as the ghostface killer Wink )

but am glad Atlanta gets their team back, the Beat should have been part of WPS from the getgo...great fanbase there.

It seems like Atlanta joining in 2016, Indianapolis & Salt Lake City in 2017. Toronto & Sacramento have also been rumored lately.

Really?? VIBE? Ridiculous. Another Nike name.....and this one isn't even a good one. It seems they have run out of names.

they should just be named the Beat. No reason why they should have a different name.

Orlando to enter NWSL as 10th team in 2016.

Salt Lake City & Atlanta have both said they're waiting until 2017.

Reports are now also suggesting that the NWSL will divide into two conferences.

EAST: Boston, Western New York, SkyBlue, Washington, Orlando
WEST: Seattle, Portland, Houston, Chicago, Kansas City

Other offseason NWSL reports: MLS's Real Salt Lake & San Jose Earthquakes have submitted applications for an NWSL expansion team as well, to start play in 2017. The New York Red Bulls are rumored to try and buy the NJ SkyBlue franchise and possibly move them to Red Bulls arena.

I guess it was only a matter of time before the league messed up a good thing with the single table. If they are going to go to conferences, the league should wait until they can have 6 in each.

if they wait until 6 teams each, it would likely be for 2017 if Salt Lake City & San Jose join. It doesn't seem like the NWSL will refuse any bids from any potential MLS owners.

AST: Boston, Western New York, SkyBlue, Washington, Orlando, Chicago
WEST: Seattle, Portland, Houston, Kansas City, Salt Lake City, San Jose

this would be huge, honestly RU is not in the ny market closer to philly really and nj's interest is not enough IMHO...having a nyc acessable team would be big...just dont rename the caffinators please Wink

Always makes me smile when I see quotes from Rebkellians doing their thing out in the real world Very Happy

Red Stars’ move to Toyota Park part of ‘new horizon’
http://equalizersoccer.com/2015/12/21/red-stars-move-toyota-park-future-nwsl/

Quote:
Benedictine will leave one more legacy for its three-year relationship with NWSL and the Red Stars. The seasons there allowed the club to gain the needed stability to move back to Toyota Park. And according to general manager Alyse LaHue, the financial particulars are much more favorable than they were in 2009 and 2010.
“Toyota Park, their staff, and Mayor (Steven) Landek from the village of Bridgeview were very keen on us coming back to play for 2016, so it was a much different negotiation than during WPS,” LaHue said. “If we were playing under a similar contract as during that time, we simply wouldn’t have been able to return.”

that's fantastic!! I also think FC Kansas City needs to move to Sporting Park.

reports are that with MLS' Minnesota United's new stadium deal, that a NWSL expansion team is part of their contract with MLS. A proposed Sacramento MLS team also has it in their contract to bring in an NWSL expansion team as well. MLS' Minnesota team is set to join in 2017, so could a NWSL expansion team be as close as 2018?? Sacramento's a little further down, possibly not joining MLS until 2019 at the earliest. A NWSL expansion team in Sacramento might not happen until 2020.

Salt Lake City seems like a lock for 2017 NWSL expansion & San Jose has been relatively quiet about their NWSL bid. Adding one team a year after 2017 might be good for the NWSL.

2017: Salt Lake City & San Jose(12 teams)
2018: Atlanta
2019: Minnesota(14 teams)
2020: Los Angeles
2021: Sacramento(16 teams)

EAST: Atlanta, Boston, Western New York, Kansas City, SkyBlue, Washington, Orlando, Chicago
WEST: Seattle, Portland, Houston, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Minnesota, Sacramento, Los Angeles

The latest NWSL expansion rumors have Mia Hamm(co-owner of LAFC in MLS) wants to bring a NWSL team to Los Angeles once LAFC is off the ground. That may not be until 2020. But the Vancouver Whitecaps & Dallas FC have openly stated recently they're interested, possibly as soon as 2018. The NWSL could be at 16 teams by 2020, with 10 of those teams owned by MLS teams(if NYCFC or RedBulls buy SkyBlue).

2017: Salt Lake City & San Jose.
2018: Vancouver & Dallas.
2020: Los Angeles & Minnesota.

according to the Soccer Wire, MLS's LAFC will be getting a NWSL expansion team for 2018. The NWSL's commissioner recently stated he wants the next expansion teams to come into the league two at a time. Maybe this means no expansion for 2017 & Los Angeles & Salt Lake City join for 2018?

Awesome. I live close to the site of the new LA soccer stadium and have been hoping to hear an NWSL team would arrive when it opens in 2018.

Atlanta, Carolina(Raleigh) close securing NWSL teams.

Atlanta:

Carolina:

2019: Los Angeles & Atlanta
2020: San Jose & Minnesota

EASTERN CONFERENCE
Boston
Western NY
NY/NJ SkyBlue
Washington
Carolina
Atlanta
Orlando
Chicago

WESTERN CONFERENCE
Kansas City
Houston
Seattle
Portland
Los Angeles
San Jose
Salt Lake City
Minnesota

Grow the league, increase salaries. No players should be making under minimum wage for the season....not technically illegal, but quite unethical. Making $6,000 for the 6-month season, 4 weeks a month, 40 hour work week (yeah like they only spend 40 hours a week at it) comes to $6.25/hr...and that's before taxes. No wonder some of the young players are bailing for Europe or just not playing after college.

the Vancouver Whitecaps are apparently now throwing their $$ into an expansion bid as well. Several sources are reporting the Caps have submitted all necessary paperwork for an expansion team. An MLS owned NWSL team will be pushed into the front of the line for expansion. Maybe Carolina & Atlanta now get push into 2019 or even 2020? League commissioner has stated they want 14 teams buy 2020. Might we then see 16 teams by 2022?
