In UConn's high-powered offense, sophomore Saniya Chong is averaging an unremarkable 6.6 PPG. However, per WBB State statistics as of today, Chong is a very productive shooter in her 20.3 minutes per game.

Among all 1,201 guards D1 guards in the country, Chong is 25th in FG% at 50.8.

Among all 1,816 D1 players in the country, Chong is:

- 9th in Effective Field Goal % at 63.6 (4th among guards)

- 13th in Points per Shot at 1.28 (7th among guards)

- 14th in True Shooting % at 64.6 (7th among guards)

Chong is shooting 44.1% on 3FG's, which would put her about 15th in the country if she had a few more makes to qualify.

Chong still plays too tentatively, especially in failing to penetrate the perimeter defense. Along with three-point shooting, that was her forte in high school: penetrating into the arc and then making a pass-shoot-drive decision. In addition, her teammates need to find her more often on her cuts and screen moves.

Her failure to penetrate enough is partly because she's not usually controlling the ball when Jefferson is in the lineup, and partly because that Geno is in almost always in slow down/half court mode when Chong is controlling the ball late in games. But part is still her diffidence, deference, unselfishness and seeming lack of confidence.

Get more aggressive, Saniya, and shoot.

I agree that she should shoot more, but unless she improves her defense, she will not get much playing time.

Chong's defense has improved a lot in college, and I'm of the strong opinion that she's now undeservedly burdened with a mindlessly persistent rap -- a meme, a robotic slogan -- on the subject of her defense. However, I don't want to focus on that because minutes are not Chong's primary problem. She gets 20.3 per game.

The problem is her Usage Percentage, which is ninth on the team at 14.37, below Courtney Ekmark and just above walk-on Tierney Lawlor.

A player only gets Usage points in one of three ways: ending a possession by shooting a field goal, shooting a free throw or committing a turnover. Having a high Usage Percentage is not necessarily a good thing, because it could be accomplished by chucking and missing a lot of shots or by turning the ball over a lot. However, if all a player does is receive passes and make passes, she'll have a zero Usage Percentage. That player "does nothing" with every one of her possessions.

When we have a player like Chong who is among the elite in the country in many important shooting percentage metrics, but yet has a significantly below average Usage Percentage on her own team, that means to me that she's not being aggressive enough in getting off field goals and drawing shooting fouls -- or that teammates her are not helping her do those things enough with their own screening, passing and play choices.

Chong needs to get more involved in shooting and assisting on offense on a per possession basis.

I believe that much of Chong's issues with Usage Percentage and Assist Rate are mental -- that she's much more fragile in confidence than Jefferson or Nurse. I think losing her starting job after the Stanford game hurt her confidence, and hence performance, badly.

She had begun the season with two very strong offensive games against Davis and Stanford. In those two games, Chong had averaged 16 PPG, shot 12-18 overall, 4-4 on 2pt shots, 8-14 on 3pt shots, and had a 4/1 A/TO. After she lost her starting job, her scoring and shooting immediately crashed.

Chong's been Miss February so far, leading the team in February's five games in every shooting category except PPG: FG%, 3FG%, TS%, eFG% and PP/Shot -- while still only having a February Usage Percentage of 12.60. Meaning, while she's been hitting like crazy in February, she's still not taking many field goals or fouls shots per possession.

If Chong would make two more shots per game, with her mix of 2's and 3's, she'd be scoring as much per game as Nurse and Jefferson, even with her lesser minutes. Then, if she could add in two more assists per game, there would be an entirely different narrative about her. These things are very doable. She has the skills.
