I'm surprised Kayla Alexander didn't make the cut for Canada. 6'4" centers with WNBA experience aren't easy to find.

She just showed up a few days ago to try out, while most of this team has been set and working together for months. It's not surprising she didn't make it. But she may in the future.

I'm curious why she has apparently never tried to play with Team Canada before now.

Yes and she has actually been at some practices helping out, but she's not close to playing yet so she is not on the team.

Team Canada does have two players with WNBA experience, so that's something.

Had she played for UConn, it wouldn't have mattered. She would have made the team either way.

Do players get a per diem while they are in camp?

You must not watch women's college basketball at all. She played for Syracuse. The school that was in the Big East Conference before it broke up. She played against UCONN during her career at Syracuse.

i do watch college basketball. i tend to watch all UConn games at the minimum and i make rounds to other teams as well. none of that changes the fact that i have no memory of this person whatsoever

I am not a fan of one specific college team. I try to follow all teams that have WNBA quality talent. I do this to stay informed on who are the best players available for each draft.

Thanks for the link, I happy to see Nirra Fields was named to the World Championship team. And I think it's cool that Katherine and Michelle Plouffe get to play with each other again and represent Canada at the World Championships after playing apart for 4 years while in college.

Congrats to all named to the team.

I got the impression from the article that she was there more to get familiar with the system and players for the future and not as much to tryout for the World Championship team.

Kind of odd. Canada had 14 players in camp -- 3 of them centers -- and they cut two centers. One player was Alexander from the WNBA, the other was promising Oregon State sophomore Ruth Hamblin, who is 6-6 and gave Notre Dame fits this year when she blocked 9 shots.

They kept Krysten Boogaard, who was a decent player at Kansas -- probably underutilized -- but the other two are more talented. Oh well, at least it's some good news for Krysten who has had to live through the nightmare of her brother's death and the initial arrest of her other brother related to that event. It was back in the news in New York because two other men were just arrested this week (3 years after the fact), and Derek last played for the NY Rangers.

I mean no disrespect to the Canadian women's basketball team. They haven't had much success in FIBA World Championship or Summer Olympics.

Fiba worlds:
1994: 7th place
2006: 11th place
2010: 12th place

Summer Olympics:
1996: 11th place
2000: 10th place
2012: 8th place

I will give the Canadian women their respect for being one of the elite teams in the FIBA Americas Championship over the last 25 years.Canada has finished top 3 in 9 of the 12 FAC tournaments. However,USA and Australia never play in this tournament. It's like the WNBA without Phoenix and Minnesota.

Our last two games against Canada have been blowout wins
2012 Olympics 91-48
2010 worlds 87-46

That's a 42.0 pt margin of victory.

So anyone picking Canada to beat the USA is just...
