Freedom's toll

Bush erred in underestimating cost, but his war is just

The level of gloom in the White House must be covering the windows with blues day and night, especially since the number of American deaths in Iraq has now reached 2,000, and the peace demonstrators seem to feel that their protests have been given a new energy. What is the issue? Is it that America should pull out because some people who have no belief in democracy have decided that the best way to vote is by murdering civilians at every opportunity?

<snip>

The reality in Iraq is that something is being born that is rising against great resistance. No matter how much the word has been disparaged, it is a democracy, and, for now, it is a developing democracy that is costing the lives of civilians and our military.

In our time, each death is given the attention by our media that draws as much overwrought sentiment as possible because our media, for all of its freedom and information, is as given to the soap opera as it is to sensationalism and the exploitation of violence.

There is nothing more qualified for the lower side of the media than a terrorist bombing with murdered civilians or military personnel. Nothing can be more sentimentalized than weeping or embittered mothers. But the hard facts remain in place. Every social step forward, from the ending of slavery to the deposing of a dictator, is paid for in blood, mutilation and grief.

Perhaps the greatest mistake of this administration is that it gave the impression to the public that this would all be a walk through the park. It is a walk through the park, but the park is filled with land mines, and the public seems to want to now go back to sleep when it needs to wake up to the fact that this is a hard and thankless job that will, in the long run, prove to be more important than even those in this administration may have thought possible.
