Quote:
"SNL" turned the issue into comedy when "Scandal" star Kerry Washington was a guest host. Washington was portrayed as exasperated when she was asked to impersonate first lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Beyonce in the same skit. At the top of the show, an "SNL" producer apologized for the number of black female characters Washington needed to play that night.

Behind the scenes, though, "SNL" founding executive producer Lorne Michaels was busy holding comedy showcases across the country, searching for a black woman to join the cast.

Loooong overdue. I kinda like Jessica Williams ("Daily Show"), but I'm certain there's no lack of talent out there.

Lots of pressure for her. If she isn't great, there will be no shortage of people calling her an unqualified token hire.

I still miss Ellen Cleghorne. Her career wasn't quite the same after her own sitcom (on the WB Network) lasted for only 12 episodes.

It's funny more often than most comedy shows

That you're having trouble with all of them suggests that the problem isn't in the programs

That doesn't seem to phase Kenan Thompson.

He wasn't alone, they brought in Finesse Mitchell at the same time, and they had not gone years without a black man. Tracy Morgan and Dean Edwards had just left the show.

okay, have it your way. i'd rather like to think that i'm just not one of the lowest common denominator those big-three network shows aim for, and that's fine with me.

I'm curious, Sambista....are you referring to comedy as in The Comedy Channel's selectionis, or are you referring to sitcoms, too? I ask because, if you haven't seen "Modern Family" yet, it's hands down, the brightest spot on the TV Landscape. Brilliant writing. Cool

I did not limit my observation to network shows

Sasheer Zamata is leaving SNL after three and a half seasons. She was always good, but consistently under-utilized.

"good" just ain't enough these days. She really didn't demonstrate any *zing*, in the times I saw her. Some of their players just command scenes, and she was never one of those, imo.

She's more of a facilitator. She was also required to do a lot of impressions, which is not her strength.

I think she was good and I would have kept her. A black woman is at some disadvantage in that she can't portray Kelly Ann Conway, or Hillary Clinton or Rachel Maddow, etc. And she competed with Leslie Jones for any part that had <black female character> in the script.

What always has me shaking my head about SNL is when some popular cast member leaves the show without having a new gig (e.g. Vanessa Bayer). Does Lorne Michaels fire them, and is it for a good reason or just whimsey? I can't see getting tired of working on a show that only requires half a year's work, at best, and in which cast members, like Bayer, have done movies concurrently.

Vanessa is still in the cast. At least, she was last weekend, in their season finale.

Vanessa Bayer and Bobby Moynihan are also leaving the show
