April Sykes and AGL cut by the Mercury.....

I am a fan of AGL. I am sad that even tho she had a great overseas season (22 pts per game for the season), she did not make the team. Hope another team picks her up.

Does anyone have a link to the new CBA? I see that the old one is available on the WNBA players association website but not the new one.

so could Gilbreath get cut and they keep Bias instead just to stay under th cap. How much more would Gilbreath make over Bias??

I think the answer could be that nobody knows as the new CBA has not been made public.

Again, these numbers were just made up...guesses and speculation based on randomly decided, speculative salaries loosely based on 2013 pay scale guidelines as set out by the 2008 CBA.

If they keep Bias, it is due to having some floor leadership and being a true point guard versus a combo or shooting guard.

IMHO, it is more about positional need than salary cap, yet the cap likely played a role in the decision as well.

Why wouldn't Bonner be a 105 player - she's not on her rookie deal. Also Bass may be more than 70 considering she was one of the top UFA's available at her position.

Folks, how many times must I state this?

THESE NUMBERS WERE MADE UP
. mb1 (me) pulled them out of his arse.

Numbers were just randomly assigned to players to give an example (perhaps a very poor one) to how the salary might factor into roster decisions.

Gilbreath is a very smart player who's been in the league, and Phoenix is in win-now mode. It would seem to me that unless
Bias is markedly better than Gilbreath, the vet gets the edge.

If it were a rebuilding team, maybe you go in the other direction, but Gilbreath can step on the court in big moments and make smart plays, as she did in last season's playoffs. She's also taller than Bias and most likely a better defender (experience helps a lot when it comes to defending at this level).

But how many backup wings do you need? Assuming Taurasi and Bonner start at 2 and 3, they've already got Murphy, Jekabsone-Zogota and Taylor (whenever she's ready, assuming ever). Gilbreath would be the defensive option, and they could use Taurasi as the backup PG, but there's not much point keeping Gilbreath if Brondello doesn't think she's ever going to play.

Gilbreath or the extra big are both plausible options, but the backup point guard is the clearest position of need if Bias is good enough to warrant keeping.

First, kudos and bravo to the Phoenix Mercury for live streaming media day.

Ben York was just interviewing Jim Pitman.

He spoke of aquiring Erin Phillips to start at PG.

Then adding Murphy for slashing, then Bass for rebounding and toughness.

Next was Kobryn for same reasons as Bass, and Jekabsone-Zogota.

Last, he more or less implied that draft pick Bias would be backup point guard.

Gilbreath had an A/TO of 2.0, which seems pretty point guardy to me.

She also started 30 games, and again, if I'm in win-now mode, I want a veteran who can handle the ball in the playoffs and make smart defensive plays (her defense on the Sparks' last shot in last year's playoffs was superb).

People seem to think experience doesn't matter, but players like Gilbreath and Jasmine Thomas bring a lot more to the table than an untried rookie -- unless of course the rookie has dominated in training camp.

You're kidding right? She averaged 1.5 APG. By your definition, I guess Janel McCarville is one of the top PG's in the league.

Gilbreath started 30 games in a spot the team were desperate to remove her from as soon as possible in the offseason, and her inability to hit a shot or stretch the floor was severely damaging in the playoffs.

And yeah, she's guardy - 2-guardy. She's a wing. If you don't keep Bias (or go searching outside the curent roster for a PG), you're relying on a player who's still returning from a variety of injuries as the only point guard on your roster - with the fallback option being a return to last season's 'give it to Taurasi and let her figure out what to do with it' plan.

You really don't want AJZ, Murphy, Gilbreath or Bonner playing a single minute as your primary ballhandler.

I'm not saying Gilbreath is worthless, by any means. She's long, and mobile, and if she works on her shot she could have a decent future in this league. But they added Murphy and AJZ, and there just might not be room for her any more on this particular roster.

She averaged 22.5 minutes a game, which is why per-game stats don't mean much.

I'm not claiming she's a starting point guard in the league, but rather that she's a good ballhandler who makes good decisions and could back up the point for a few minutes a game and not kill you.

And she's a long 6-0, which means she's difficult to doubleteam and a more effective defender.

so unless there's some miracle that the Mercury can carry 12 players, this means Gilbreath is out.

PG: Phillips/Bias
SG: Taurasi/Murphy/Jekabsone-Zogota
SF: Bonner/Taylor
PF: Dupree/Bass
C: Griner/Kobryn

I was really hoping the Merc would make room for Lucas, but I know it wasn't going to happen.
