The Boomers (4-1) have a road game tomorrow night against Canberra Capitals, who have replaced injured Lauren Jackson by signing WNBA All-Star Alana Beard.

Averaging 13.6ppg over two WNBA seasons as a guard-forward with the Washington Mystics, Beard is expected to have an immediate impact for the Caps (3-1) who have lost Jackson (leg stress fractures), possibly for the season.

Here is another site:
http://townsvillebulletin.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,7034,17071359%255E15702,00.html
Quote:

TOWNSVILLE basketball fans disappointed by the fact that WNBA superstar Lauren Jackson won't play when the Canberra Capitals travel north next month received some compensation this week.

While the Fire are still working with the women's league to ensure Jackson makes the trip to Townsville, Canberra's announcement that WNBA 2005 All Star Alana Beard has been signed to a short-term contract should ensure The Swamp will still see its fair share of razzle-dazzle.

Fire coach David Herbert described Beard, a 23-year-old, 180cm guard/forward who plays for the Washington Mystics, as 'one of the most exciting talents you will ever have the chance to watch'.

Tickets are still available for the November 19 fixture.

it is a short term contract

Alana played strongly in her first game for the Capitals. Despite being on the losing side she impressed with good offensive numbers.
