The opening game of the season goes down to the wire, with Bulleen edging out Sydney Uni in overtime 98-90. Bulleen led by 10 at three quarter time but Sydney Uni stormed back, led by Belinda Snell's 16 fourth quarter points, including a game tying trey with 5.6 seconds to play. Sydney Uni scored the first four points of overtime... but Bulleen scored the last 12 Crying or Very sad

Katrina Hibbert led with the winners with 27 points while Belinda Snell had 33 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the losers. Search parties have been sent out for Trish Fallon who managed 7 points and 3 turnovers in 37 minutes (quite possibly because she had to play the 5 tonight). Sydney Uni also had 20 turnovers, compared to Bulleen's 13.

Full game report is here. Boxscore is here.

Sydney Uni have a back to back and play defending champions Dandenong tomorrow night. Here's hoping they're fired up enough to win and Dandenong aren't at full strength at the moment.

Adelaide beat Townsville, 93-84. For Adelaide, Erin Phillips had 17 points while Laura Summerton had 14. Phillips' backcourt partner Jenni Screen led all scorers with 26.

No boxscore yet. Link to game story is here

43 mins. for Snell? At that pace, she only needs to play about 2 more games to surpass her entire WNBA season.

Adelaide/Townsville boxscore is up

Erin Phillips had 7 rebound and 10 assists while Laura Summerton had 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Also of note is Townsville''s gun American centre Jennifer Crouse scoring no points in 18 minutes but she blocked 5 shots.

Lauren Jackson begins her WNBL season with a lazy 39 points Smile

Dandenong beat Sydney Uni 72-64. Snell held to 6 points by reigning DPOTY Emily McInerny. Dandenong had a 24-10 4th quarter to seal the win. Boxscore is here. Link to full game report is here

Ball-handling a real problem for Sydney Uni early on in the season with #1 and #2 PGs out injured (Poto and Veal).

Canberra beat the AIS, 91-47. Link to game report is here

As Luuuc has mentioned, LJ scored 39 points. It must be pointed out that the AIS is very weak at the moment, having lost their six leading scorers from last season to graduation or injury Shocked They committed 40 turnovers.

I'm looking forward to Perth "highlights" from Sunday. Wink
Is Camino out for the entire season?

Yes, Renae is out for the entire season. The AIS could make Perth look good this season Shocked

I enjoy Perth "highlights". It's a celebration in sub-mediocrity. My favourite is when Megan Thompson airballed a reverse layup (why did she even try?)

Boxscore for Canberra/AIS is up

If I'm Canberra, I'd be a bit worried. They're a LJ injury away from being out of playoffs and we all know LJ's past injury history.

... and for that very reason I was shocked to see LJ playing major minutes in the first game. OK, 28/40 isn't exactly huge, but when the game is such a blowout wouldn't you go easy with her? I know I would. Certainly no more than 20 minutes in AIS & Perth games.

I agree with the statements suggesting that using her so much in this game is 'excessive/risky' but if AD can't stop her playing when she demands to play, Graffie won't be able to either. Head-strong young woman that Jackson. I advocated that getting her to play the Commonwealth Games is likewise excessive but as has been pointed out Lauren has set her mind on a certain outcome and that's that. From an Opals perspective this is a sheer delight Smile

BTW Str8_Butta33, Vealy is recovering from a torn ACL and should be back in action in a month or so.

You will all be happy to know Megan missed many lay ups today, from all different angles to the basket (yes even a reverse one which went straight into the ring). I'd say she missed around five lay ups in her 0/7 shooting performance today. Stynxtacular!

Perth went down to Townsville 57-100.

Rohanee Cox was everywhere, finishing with 22 points, 14 boards and 6 assists. She and Crouse had some very very sweet blocks during the game. Kelly Wilson also had a solid one with 22 points on 8/10 shooting.

Katherine Hanks somehow jagged a 20 point game - the stat line is very flattering for her and a lot of her points came in junk time (the entire second half basically).

After that game I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season.
Rohanee was awesome today Very Happy but Townsville still aren't in the top echelon of the league and yet they put up 100 points on us. Sweeeeet Twisted Evil

Luuuc, Hellcat ... how did Kingy play against the Stynx for Townsville? Box scores aside ... did she do any good?

She played pretty well - got a good chunk of court time and was very active, but the shots just weren't dropping for her unfortunately.

Was surprised she started ahead of Brassard, but I thought she held her own. As Luuuc said it wasn't really her night points wise but she contributed well defensively I thought.

Hats off to Heilbronn who put in a sterling effort replacing Woodyard as the token "annoying chick on the bench that doesn't stop yelling all game". Razz

Another note-worthy aspect of the game was that the pre-match national anthem was sung by... the Perth Lynx. Apparently our budget no longer permits such luxuries as the Advance Australia Fair CD.

Celleste Hillbron ... is like that all the damn time. She's probably the only reason I don't go for Townsville more often, last year it was Woodyard ... and Woodyard is from the same town as me Rolling Eyes

Is Veal under contract with a WNBA Team?

Were the girls able to get in a rehearsal Question Irrespective of their form in the WNBL this anthem singing thing could be a goldmine spin-off Exclamation Wink

King's off shooting 3/13 & 0/5 from deep were partly offset by her 5 assists, but she and Flanagan although clocking big minutes were seemingly the unlucky ones failing to record double figures.

Perth were shaded on the boards. It seems from the stats everyone from the Fire must have been either scoring inside, slashing to the basket, and or getting to the freethrow line. Yet the number of field goals attempted by both sides was fairly even (Lynx 77 vs Fire 79.) The score was convincing for the Fire anyway! Smile

They sing as well as they play. Razz

It was very much a case of "hey where is the anthem singer? No singer? Ok... is the CD queued up? No CD? Ok girls start singing."

The Flames used to have a regular singer but I think we resort to the CD now. The CD version sounds really second rate.

Luckily, only 4 people were in the Perth stands to hear it. And Luuuc was so drunk, he couldn't tell if it was the Australian national anthem or the theme song from Bonanza. Shocked

There were actually around 400 people at the game.

395 of them were there to see good friends Rohanee Cox and Jenny Crouse. Razz

LJ wins Player of the Week.

I don't know; I think Rohanee Cox might have been more deserving for a good comeback effort. A past WNBA MVP beating up on a bunch of high schoolers really isn't that impressive.
