I think the US is so deep in womens basketball talent, we could field an entirely different team which would meet our current team in the final. We could probably field a third team which could compete, though I will not attempt to create one here.

An example of such a second 12-man team would be:

1: Lindsay Harding
Renee Montgomery

2: Kristi Tolliver
Monica Wright

combo: Kara Lawson or Cappie Pondexter (for Olympic experience)

3:DeWanna Bonner
Candace DuPree

4:Rebekkah Brunson
Plenette Pierson
Nekka Ogwumike

5:Ruth Riley
Elaine Delle Donne (I assume Britney still will refuse to join)

We would be a little light in post height and weight, but would have strong rebounding, speed, and outside shooting.
I'm not sure of Epiphany Prince's natiional status, but if she were available, would install her as the combo guard.

Thoughts or improvements, anyone?

Your second team is NOT even close in terms of talent as the actual USA is. They would be blown completely out of the water. So yes you can make a second team but they wouldn't stand a chance again team USA #1. A third team is impossible and would be unlikely to make it to the final game where they'd mea team USA. A third team wouldn't get past Russia or Australia.

A second team could. Your second team wouldn't.

Interesting thought that got quickly de-railed.

I think we should take the starting five on one team and the second five on the other team. Then fit others (mostly from the pool) around them.

Team A:
Fowles
Charles
Catch
Taurasi
Bird

Team B:
Parker
Moore
Angel
'Mone
Whalen

To Team A, add:

Harding
Lawson
Langhorne
Sophia
Cash
Jones
Piph

To Team B, add:
Griner
Delle Donne
Brunson
Cappie
Diggins
Dupree
Douglas

I got team B.

Feel free to add your own!

I didn't say they would beat the USA's current team in the gold medal game, I said they would meet them there. Therefore, the standard is not the current team, but the other teams in the olympic pool. With that in mind, how would they do?

I see your point, but the exercise is about players not currently on the USA team. Who do you think could meet the USA in the gold round? By the way, Sophia is from another country, so could not qualify.

Sophia is a naturalized American citizen. She tried out for Team USA last fall.

PG: Kara Lawson/Danielle Robinson/Lindsey Harding
SG: Cappie Pondexter/Epiphanny Prince (has not appeared for Russian NT in a FIBA-sanctioned event AFAIK)/Armintie Price
SF: DeWanna Bonner
PF: Sophia Young/Rebekkah Brunson/Candice Dupree/Nneka Ogwumike
C: Kia Vaughn or Michelle Snow (not both)

Weak to very weak at the three and five but strong at the 1, 2, and 4 positions. That team would fully exploit Team USA's lack of perimeter defense at the starting guard positions and would be able to turn defense into offense.

Fair enough. I hope you will provide an improved lineup. Sorry, you already did. Michelle Snow? Really? You follow the Mystics, do you not?

I already did. Toss in Monica Wright or Kristi Toliver and Jayne Appel as alternates.

Yes I do, which is why I didn't suggest Ashley Robinson despite her 6'4 height.

My question to you is how much Sky basketball have you watched? Ruth Riley is beyond awful.

Yes. Easily.

That would mean Becky Hammon could actually play for Team Usa, too!

hmmm. i seem to recall some rule stating if you've already played for another country at the olympics, you are disqualified from playing for the u.s.. i'm sure richyyy could confirm or deny this. wonder if he's back from the arena yet.

sorry your team got beat, richyyy.

She can if she is a naturalized citizen. Is she? You have to maintain residence with a green card for 5, years. i think my ex-wife got her citizenship inside six years after she got her green card.

Yeah, I'm here. And no, you can't switch countries once you've represented one in FIBA-recognised competition.

Already a load of discussion on this thread topic here - http://boards.rebkell.net/viewtopic.php?p=1043574#1043574 - by the way. I still say the US would be favourites for gold and silver, and have a strong shot at bronze, if allowed to enter multiple teams.

I don't think you could pass Russia or Austrailia with a B squad...The Men learned the hard way...yes the A of the A squad is and will always be heads and shoulders above the A of the A of the rest of the world. BUT the B of the A would struggle...They would win but they would struggle and would have to have luck to beat the top of the teams. This is also known as the 2004 men. You can point out selfish players or not caring but the fact really is that it was a B squad...one of very good players, Very good was not good enough to be the best of the World's best. This is also why the U23 idea wouldn't work for US basketball. (Stern got the idea from FIFA but FIFA has other reasons not to have the best pros in the olympics, namely what happens in the summer of Winter Olympic years Wink)
