I guess metal is also appropriate, but suspect medal is what you want.

The US has managed to pull ahead of China in Gold 26-25. We should finish further ahead, as we are expected to do better than the Chinese in the track & field events.

However, they have a much greater diversity of sports in which they are successful. 16 of our 26 golds have come in swimming events. China has 25 golds, but no more than five from any one area.

China is back up on us 34-30.

Where we are really slacking is men's sports. Only 10 of our 30 Gold Medals are from male athletes and more than half of them are from two guys (Phelps and Lochte). We have one Gold Medal from a male athlete who isn't a swimmer (Vincent Hancock won for skeet shooting).

By way of comparison, China has 15 Gold Medals from men, 18 from women, and one in mixed doubles badminton.

it should also be noted that Guatemala, Grenada & Cyprus claimed their first ever Olympic medals the other day, dropping the number of countries to never win a medal from 80 to 77.

Didn't Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic win gold in 2004?

No problem.

And that's great for those 3 countries to have their first Olympic medalist.

The US won four Gold Medals today while China won two, so the Chinese lead is down to 36-34.

The US medals were three from women (Long Jump, 200m, Beach Volleyball) and one from men (110m hurdles).

China one each from men (Team Table Tennis) and women ( -49kg Taekwondo )

You'll have to be content with having more men's medals than us (for now)

Botswana can now be added to the list as Amos Nijel won silver in the men's 800m.

That's fun for those countries. I did notice in the opening ceremonies that Bangladesh was mentioned as the biggest country (most populous?) to never medal in the Olympics. An ignominious mantle to bear. Confused

The US won five Gold Medals today to pull ahead of China. The count is now 39-37.

The US got two from men (Decathlon, Triple Jump) and three from women (Boxing - Middleweight, Soccer, Water Polo). We have 26 from women and 13 from men.

China picked up one, from a woman (Diving - 10m platform). They have 20 from women, 16 from men, and one in mixed doubles badminton.

The third place British picked up two today to bring their total to 25. They have 13 from men, nine from women, and three in dressage (a mixed gender event).

It was three for us today, actually (Adams in the boxing, Dujardin in the dressage, and Jones in the taekwondo - all ladies), but your total's right.

I did the total and then went back to do the daily for y'all. I skipped over Jones.

I would not be shocked to see you gain some ground on China tomorrow, as they have few (if any) good medal opportunities.

I was expecting the US to get ahead of China once the track & field events starting. China has almost zero chances at winning medals in track & field.

They did win one for the men's 20km walk race, which is technically a track & field event

American women would be third in the medal table if they were a nation. Some serious girl power.

They would be second in Gold Medals with 26, fourth in overall medals with 51 (52 if you count mixed doubles tennis).

What are you trying to say? That the men are dragging the US down? Laughing

Two more Gold Medals for the USA today. One from women (4x100 relay) and one from men (Freestyle wrestling - 74kg). That makes 41 overall, 27 from women and 14 from men.

China (37) and the UK (25) received no Gold Medals today.
