It was amazing. 70,000 people for women's football. Unreal. You know how people bitch about WNBA attendance? Well, top division women's football in England gets a couple of hundred people if they're lucky for each game. Two-digit attendances aren't unknown. This country, despite being utterly in love with football, does not give the tiniest toss about the women's game.

And I just watched GB (essentially England) beat Brazil with 70,000 people screaming along beside me. Incredible.

Unfortunately, now we're in the same half of the draw as the US...

The lone Scot (Little) on the field definitely impressed. I'm only thinking one game at a time for my US team. But the potential prospect of facing GB in front of 75k does not excite me at all. Far too dangerous. And they know the US well since a batch of them have spent significant time playing in the US.

The current record for largest women's Olympic soccer crowd is 76,489, set during the 1996 games' Gold medal match in Athens, GA at Sanford Stadium. The way the quarterfinals are set-up, we could see a semi-final match-up between the USA & Great Britian in Manchester whose capacity is 76,000+. Would be nice to see that record broken. The other semi-final & Gold medal match are scheduled at Wembley stadium(90,000+ capacity). I have to wonder if they could possibly switch the venues and have the USA-Great Britian match at Wembley if Great Britian defeats Canada.

No. The draw and schedule are set up and in place, and have been for a long time - they won't switch the venues. There'd be uproar.

I watched Canada come from 2-nil down to get the tie vs. Sweden so I think Canada v. Great Britain will be a good match (and the Canada coach is a Brit).

The draw worked out pretty oddly with all the english-speaking nations playing one another.

I knew it, something clicked for Canada in that Sweden game... they are playing really well now. USA better be ready. (And if the refs keep letting them get away with shady tackles, it could be a rough match... ) Evil or Very Mad

That was a stonewall penalty with about 10 minutes left, which could've made things interesting. Not that we deserved to win the game. Nonsensical substitutions from Powell as well, refusing to bring on any extra attacking players or change her formation until there were about five minutes left.

Wow, tough one for GB. Canada is battle tested, tough team.

Would have been special if they could have made the semi's. Would have been a great atmosphere.

This is a good reason to just watch sport rather than read the social media.

It was funny though, when the ref called that handball on twitter non-soccer players were saying good call and soccer players were saying I want USA to win, but that was a bad call

Excellent game! I was at the edge of my seat the entire match. Megan Rapino was on fire!! Our defense was very good, but that Canadian striker was just that incredible. Don't know how we kept her from getting a goal in the extra time periods.

Regarding the calls that impacted the result - I really don't know enough to say one way or the other. I had been wondering myself if they are rules in place to prevent game delays and now I know there is some kind of time limit, though no information was provided about the actual rule the Canadian goalkeeper violated.

Also not sure about the hand ball that was called. I do know the one that wasn't called when the American had her arm straight down her side was a good no-call. The Canadian did have her elbow protruding from her body, which seems to be the reason it was called. Again, not knowing the rule, I have no way of knowing and the commentators did not fill us in.

It seems there's a whole lot of stuff that is left to the discretion of the officials, but it would be very helpful if they filled us in about how the rules actually read so we can judge if it is being interpreted correctly.
