PHX at LA on ESPN 683,000 (peaked at 1M)

*most viewed regular season on cable in 24 years
*most viewed opening day on ESPN in 11 years
(I don’t understand how these two statistics are compatible but I didn’t go to school for math!)

And this was an 11PM game!

Boo, I got beaten out on starting this thread.

This year, I will list out all the games on rated networks, even if they do not do well enough to have numbers on published lists. Most of these will be from ShowBuzzDaily as they have the most comprehensive and reliable lists. ION does get rated, but it remains to be seen how they will handle everything in those weeks with simultaneous games so stay tuned, I guess.

Numbers shown are total viewers on average:

5/19 New York-Connecticut NBATV Not listed
5/19 Phoenix-Los Angeles ESPN2 144,000
5/19 Phoenix-Los Angeles ESPN 683,000

Based on the sample, the average percentage of the following demographic groups was tuned into the ESPN portion of the game:
18-49: .23
F18-49: .18
M18-49: .28
18-34: .19
F12-34: .13
M12-34: .20
25-54: .26
50+: .28

Ya know, I actually felt bad starting the thread because I knew you usually do but I got so excited about that number. I appreciate the work you do!

Great CBS number.

Are those good for NBATv?

It is good for NBATV to even get on the Top 150 cable originals in a day, but those are even better than what we have seen when there were more numbers released.

People here hate on the proliferation of games across networks, streaming and socials but I think Englebert has put the league in the best possible negotiating position for a new TV deal. I just wish someone other than ESPN actually bothered to assemble their own broadcasts.

Have any numbers come out for Ion?

I have not seen any. They do not show much original programming so it looks like the various sites that regularly report ratings have not included them. Scripps could release numbers themselves, but I guess that we are not talking about Spelling Bee level numbers, which they bragged about plenty.

Awhom, based on your long experience in posting these numbers, could you generalize on whether the WNBA or WCBB pulls in bigger audiences?

WCBB and it’s not even close.

But I also guess it depends on the conference and matchup. I’m sure he W outdraws a MAC matchup between SUNY Buffalo and Miami at Ohio.

I have no doubt that this is true but, also, tribalism is a helluva drug. I've said it before and I'll say it again, people tune in to watch WCBB for reasons that often have little-to-nothing to do with basketball. I feel like the WNBA's ratings are a more accurate reflection of how many people actually like women's basketball than WCBB's ratings are. Like, I imagine the difference between WNBA ratings and WCBB ratings to be not unlike the difference between how many people support a content creator's Patreon, versus how many just follow them on Twitter.

I love that analogy.

Although, how many people watching BG WCBB actually went to UConn, ND or LSU? I think college sports in general are easier for bandwagon fans because it’s easier to build superteams which make it easy to be a fan of a lot of college teams across all sports. How hard is it to be an “Alabama football” fan, even if you never went there and live in Virginia? Not hard at all because they win a lot and you can feel validated. It’s the main reason I don’t care for college sports. It’s like if the Aces had the first 4 pics in every draft every year. How hard is that?

Thank you, johnjohnW. I addressed awhom because I see him doing these threads for WCBB.

Definitely still WCBB by far, but it has been hard to get reasonable comparisons so far this season with so few WNBA games on ESPN and ESPN2.

Showbuzzdaily is stopping with providing ratings. Unfortunately, the alternatives are less reliable and even less interested in sports so we will see what is available.

I’m interested in the CBS numbers as the league isn’t heavily associated with that network and the broadcast feels rather generic compared to the heavily branded ESPN broadcasts. The numbers are on par with ABC which is good. I would love to see a bigger effort from CBS to brand tho wit broadcasts.

Overall, the numbers show that if you put the games on consistently on a major network, they do pretty well. I can’t wait to see the end of year reports touting the increased ratings. Hopefully the ESPN number stay strong.

Sports Media Watch, which has historically relied on PR or other sites to give them ratings to comment on, is filling the gap in terms of sports ratings. They plan to list out the top 100 games each week. Since they are sports-focused, they dug out the ION ratings. I have the feature game listed, but for this week, that should cover the national broadcast and the local broadcast of the other game.

6/30 Los Angeles-Chicago ION 317,000
7/1 Connecticut-Las Vegas ABC 644,000
7/1 Minnesota-Phoenix NBATV Not Listed
7/2 Washington-Dallas ABC 581,000

I don’t know how that Ion number compares to the reruns of SVU but I’d say that’s pretty decent.
