How does the class of 2013 stand up?

As a whole the class produced 1777.5 points, the most since the 2008 class.

Nobody in the class came close to being the worst pick ever.

Emma Meesseman ranks as the best #19 pick ever by a wide margin. She's also the steal of the draft with 159 games, 124 starts, and an All Star appearance.

The bust of the draft was Tianna Hawkins. 124 games, one start, puts her 49.9 points below the average #6 pick.

Who do you determine bust of the draft? #7 pick Toni Young was out of the league quickly, and #5 pick Bone didn't even play this season and might be blacklisted. At least Hawkins is still playing and was on an active roster.

Their score (based on games, starts, All Star appearances, All WNBA Teams) are compared to the average player at their draft spot. Hawkins got 62.5 points, the average #6 pick is 112.4 so she's 49.9 under average.

Bone, despite sitting out this season, is right at the average #5 pick. She's played more games than Hawkins, started more than half of them, and made an All Star game.

Young is also well below average for her slot, but there's an enormous drop off from the average #6 to the average #7. #6 picks average 112.4 Value Points. #7 picks average 68.4. Look at the lists...

Sue Wicks 1997
Cindy Blodgett 1998
Crystal Robinson 1999
Betty Lennox 2000
Deanna Nolan 2001
Tamika Raymond 2002
Gwen Jackson 2003
Nicole Ohlde 2004
Temeka Johnson 2005
Candice Dupree 2006
Bernice Mosby 2007
Crystal Langhorne 2008
Briann January 2009
Jacinta Monroe 2010
Danielle Robinson 2011
Samantha Prahalis 2012
Tianna Hawkins 2013

Tora Suber 1997
Tracy Reid 1998
Tonya Edwards 1999
Lynn Pride 2000
Svetlana Abrosimova 2001
Sheila Lambert 2002
Aiysha Smith 2003
Vanessa Hayden 2004
Kara Braxton 2005
Shona Thorburn 2006
Katie Gearlds 2007
Essence Carson 2008
Courtney Paris 2009
Danielle McCray 2010
Kayla Pedersen 2011
Kelley Cain 2012
Toni Young 2013

The #6s are almost all better and often a lot better.

How does the class of 2014 stack up?

As a whole the class produced points, down slightly from the 2013 class.

Nobody in the class came close to being the best or worst pick ever.

The steal of the draft was Stefanie Dolson with 162 games, 123 starts, and two All Star appearances as the #6 pick.

The bust of the draft was Chiney Ogwumike, 95 games, 80 starts, and two All Star appearances as the #1 pick.

Ogwumike ranks as a very weak #1 pick, ahead of only LaToya Thomas and Ann Wauters.

An inevitable product of missing two of your first five seasons with major injuries, I guess. Who 'should' have gone #1 by this rating method?

Always an interesting thread. Good stuff pilight.

At least nobody picked after her is lighting the league on fire.
But if Amber Stocks should be fired for anything, it should be for turning a Michigan State WBB G.O.A.T. into a punch-line! 😵

Amber Stocks better get on the phone right after the season ends and see if she can get Chiney Ogwumike and a 1st round pick for Dolson. Smile

How does the class of 2015 stack up?

As a whole the class produced 1318 points, the 5th lowest ever

Crystal Bradford ranks as the worst ever #7 pick

Steal of the draft was Natasha Cloud with 150 games, 106 starts, as the #15 pick

Bust of the draft was Bradford with 15 games, one start, as the #7 pick

NOTE: I'm assuming no one from this class makes the All WNBA team

Jewell Loyd ranks in the low middle of #1 picks (11th of 19)

How does the class of 2016 stand up?

As a whole the class produced 1237 points. Only 2003 was worse.

The 2016 draft didn't have the best or worst at any pick.

Steal of the draft was Courtney Williams with 143 games, 105 starts, as the #8 pick. Good job Merc!

Bust of the draft was Moriah Jefferson with 80 games, 49 starts, as the #2 pick.

NOTE: I'm assuming only Breanna Stewart makes All WNBA from the class this year

Stewart ranks 12th of the 20 eligible #1 picks

Even having missed an entire season due to injury, that seems remarkably low for someone with her production and an MVP.

She's 17th in games played. #1 picks is a tough peer group. Three All WNBA mentions and an All Star appearance in one of the years missed would help more at most draft spots but at #1 it's about par for the course.

The short season this year hurts too. OTOH, even if the season had been 14 games longer and she'd started all of them it would only move her up to 10th.

Williams played a total of 6 games with no starts before Phoenix traded her. She took the court for an accumulated 25 minutes and scored a whole 3 points.

The Merc got a big haul in that trade. They knew Williams would be a contributor.

That trade always smelled like a chemistry/attitude/behavior situation to happen that fast. Im sure DT and her had flames before the Clap Clap game in the playoffs that year.

I wonder if it were more about moving Kelsey Bone. It was a great trade for the Sun at the time.

It would appear this rating method has some major holes. I mean really, who would possibly use it for anything meaningful?

How does the class of 2017 stack up?

As a whole the class produced 1054.5 points. Only 2003 was worse.

2017 didn't produce the best pick at any slot

Alaina Coates is the worst ever #2 pick
Evelyn Akhator is the worst ever #3 pick

Steal of the draft was Brittney Sykes with 150 games, 91 starts, as the #7 pick

Bust of the draft was Evelyn Akhator with 15 games, no starts, as the #3 pick. Score one for the basement dwellers!

Kelsey Plum ranks 20th of the 21 eligible #1 picks

This system rates Akhator as the #2 All Time draft bust, just behind Ann Wauters. Coates ranks 6th.

Akhator's 7.5 points is the lowest of any player taken in the top 7

Yeesh. The good news for this class is that A) the #1 Pick just enjoyed the best season of her career, so it looks like she’ll pan out well barring further injury, and B) re-evaluating the Class of 2021 is only four years away, which should be worse overall and have a worse #1 Pick (unless Collier significantly improves and/or gets traded to a team that can use her better).

I still think Chicago should’ve held onto Alaina Coates longer than they did. I think she was affected by the sudden death of her dad for a while, which held her back a bit perhaps, but earlier this W season I saw a tweet of hers saying she feels better than ever basketball-wise and is excited to do work overseas. If she puts in a good overseas season, well, she’s still 6-4 and she’s still a former Lottery pick. I hope she gets another chance.

Crazy that the Wings picked Akhator before picking Allisha Gray, who is now an 🥇Olympic gold medalist.🥇 Their ability to sensibly pick talent remains… sus, to say the least.

Good to hear re: Alaina here’s hoping she’s able to come back 100% mentally and physically. Death is tricky especially when it’s a parent and even more so when it’s sudden/unforeseen.

Curious how you arrived at your rankings. Are you counting against her the time she missed while injured? If you account for that does her ranking go up?
