Latvian center Zane Tamane has confirmed to sportacentrs.com that she has signed a training camp contract with Phoenix Mercury.

Taylor complemented my work during practices and said to try to play in the WNBA. From the previous time I was there I have grown both as a player and as a person. Mercury had an open spot at center, so I thought why not?

Damn you Phoenix Mercury Evil or Very Mad wanted her on the Storm but we are pretty booked. Really like her and as she has showed with Fenerbahce that even though she is a very tall center but she can really run the floor! So its a pretty good fit for the Mercury! Nice signing and am glad that she will get a chance to come back into the league and on my 2nd fave team Smile

I am glad too.
Time to return to our long standing tradition of foreign centers.

She's a lot better than she was the first time around, so she should help the Mercury a great deal--maybe enough to keep them out of the lottery. Smile

It is a training camp contract...I give it more than a yawn...in fact I say well done, good signing!

Worst case...we have a tall center in training camp.

Best case...we have a tall center getting bench minutes.

Mine looks like this:

PG: Riley/Prahalis?/Gray-Lawson
SG: Taurasi/Hornbuckle
SF: Houston/Taylor (IR)
PF: Dupree/Bonner
C: Sanford,Thomas,Tamane

With Taylor being injured, the signing of Houston becomes an even more brilliant move.

Since when is Houston a SF?

Yeah, I wonder where that's coming from.

PG Riley/Prahalis
G Taurasi or Hornbuckle/Gray-Lawson
G/F Hornbuckle or Taurasi/Taylor (IR)
F Bonner/Houston
F Dupree/C Sanford/C Tamane

Well Dupree is not a 5 either...I suspect they play Bonner at the 3 a lot this year.

So closer to Shades but I agree Houston won't play the 3...at least much.
PG by committee
Taurasi
Bonner
DuPree/Houston
Sanford/Tamane

and fighting with SASS for #4 in the West.

I'd be really sad if we drafted Prahalis and started Riley.

My lineup:

PG Prahalis/Riley
SG Taurasi/Hornbuckle/Gray-Lawson
SF Bonner/Hornbuckle/Houston
PF Dupree/Houston
C Sanford/Tamane

If Penny's out, there's no way Houston's starting over Bonner. Bonner will start and finally not win the 6th woman of the year award.

Houston will get some minutes at the 3, just because there isn't anyone else, really. Taurasi will play some minutes there too, but I doubt it'd be for every long. The other guards suck.

Crunch-time lineup:

PG Taurasi
SG Hornbuckle
SF Bonner
PF Houston
C Dupree

I think? Confused

Not too confident in this team without Penny. And a real PG. Gotta believe in the Bun, though.

Mostly a matter of aesthetics. I didn't want to have 3 players in both the center and PG positions and leave Bonner alone in the SF. There's a lot of flexibility here. I think Taurasi would take most of the minutes at SF when Bonner is out.

Houston did have a goal of losing 20 pounds during the offseason (inspired by Augustus?). Not sure I was seeing that happen in the picture from February, but maybe it's happening. I have witnessed Anosike, Brunson and Houston on the floor at the same time, so the notion of playing Houston as a backup SF isn't all that outrageous.

Zane should make this roster. Good signing by the Mercury, she's improved considerably since her last WNBA stint.

Defensively, if they're in that 'rover' zone, the 3 and 4 are exactly the same anyway. And if they're playing man, she can be equally awful defending 3s as 4s.

One of the good things about Phoenix's roster is the flexibility. They've got a lot of players that can jump positions, and even their system makes things a bit more fluid as well.

Tamane's certainly worth giving another shot. I still think she's thoroughly mediocre, but that's certainly better than she was the last time she tried the WNBA.

If Penny is under contract, she counts for one of the roster spots, so the Merc will only have 10 active players this year. It's a bite.

If Tamane doesnt make this roster i would be pretty shocked. She is a lot better then Thomas and maybe a crazy thing but i prefer her over Sanford too. Yes i know Sanford is better defensively but as a fit with the Mercury i prefer Tamane.

My guess:
PG Hornbuckle/Riley/Prahalis (tbh whoever gets the ball across the midline)
SG Taurasi/(Hornbuckle)/Gray-Lawson
SF Bonner/Taurasi/Taylor (IR)
PF Dupree/Houston
C Sanford/Tamane

Hornbuckle as starting PG yikes but Riley as their starting PG also yikes Confused

I'm not sure Prahalis is ready to step in at a starting role for any professional team, either.

Why doesn't Phoenix just sign Babkina? Latvia won't be going to London and she has experience play with/against Penny and Diana. She can't be any worse than the other three options.

Do they want Dikeoulakos, too?

It won't be a Mercury training camp without a Yuko Oga signing (or sighting)! Wink

She'll be busy with the Japanese National Team.

maybe

Hornbuckle/Prahalis
Taurasi/Riley/Gray-Lawson
Bonner/(Taurasi)
Dupree/Houston
Sanford/Tamane/Thomas

and if Prahalis is drafted before #6

Hornbuckle/Riley
Taurasi/Hayes/Gray-Lawson
Bonner/(Taurasi)
Dupree/Houston
Sanford/Tamane/Thomas

Depending on who becomes available PX might pick up a wing or PG off the waiver wire. Is Riley really a PG or is she an undersized SG?

Riley is a chucker SG in a body of a PG

If that's all the Mercury have ...

Career A/TO:

Gray-Lawson -- 35/21, 1.7
Hornbuckle -- 230/178, 1.3
Riley -- 87/91, .95

I think Hornbuckle is the best choice, given their careers, but maybe G-L can take a big step forward in year two, or Riley can harness her undeniable physical abilities and run an offense rather than look for a shot.

Askamp, Stepanova, Griffiths....

Then again i'm biased as one of my screensavers is of Zane holding an '06 Shock jersey.
