"My feeling on UIC is will families come into the city at night?'' Smith said. ''One of the keys for any franchise in its first years is they need some former Chicago players on the team. Maybe they could get Yolanda [Griffith of Carver] from Sacramento or Tamika [Catchings of Stevenson] from Indiana.''

Yo is very possible. Catchings, I somehow think that's not likely.

Looks like it's all but official. We're back to 14!

Hmmm, I think I've got myself a new fav team...and it helps that's not run by the Bulls because I don't like that team.

Yeah, I like the non- Bulls ownership too!
I could see Tamika there some day...She already plays for a Chicago NWBL team. She said she just drives over from Indy.

The Chicago Sirens

That is the best I can come up with.

The Great Chicago Fire? Or did we already use up that name in Portland.

chi-town being my home town, the city with the big shoulders; home of the most magnificent shrine of wonderment, the museum of science and industry; home of the unnamed but magnificent picasso scultpure downtown; home of marshall field's, which gave us frango mints; home of the original stockyards; home of the best ribs east of kansas city; home of the world-famous regal theater, where all the motown stars of the '60s performed, a place where the rats were so bold that they'd come up the aisle, sit up and beg for popcorn; where, when i was growing up, everybody had pretty fireplaces stocked with coal but nothing could be burned; where we could see comisky park's fireworks from our balcony; where you could take a jitney from one end of the south side to the other for a quarter; where people think they ARE on the east coast . . . chi-town being my home town, i'll take a stab:

the hawks is too used and too male, but maybe "the chicago hawk," like the stanford cardinal

the blast

the flurry

the gale (or gales)

the whirlwind

the zephyr

the breeze (hardly)

the windchill

the whirl

the cyclones

the bluster

the blues

the els (as in elevated train)

second city

i vote for the cyclone(s). or the blues.

or the blackstone rangers and rangerettes, the gangs i managed to avoid in my youth.

Actually, Frangoes were originally created in the kitchens of Frederick and Nelson, a Seattle department store. In the 1940s (?), Marshall Field bought F&N, and acquired Frango Mints, which Chicagoans were quick to assume were their own, because really good things tend to come from Chicago. (The recipe now belongs to Federated department stores--that's Macy's.)

I am so sorry that the team is committing to play at UIC. The arena's nice, (nicer, I hear, since its been remodeled last year or so), but it's in the kind of neighborhood that the suburban families with both money and teenaged daughters probably won't be visiting at night, and it's too small for a large market team, seating 7,000, I think.

i say they play at the allstate arena. though it's not in the heart of downtown chicago and not going to happen, it's a really safe neighborhood and right next to the airport. i just don't like the UIC Pav. for some reason but that's just me.. Confused

If Cappie comes out next year they will most definitely want her, she would bring the crowds out.

Sure sounds like the way they introduced the Sun. Blowout at the arena with Lobo, Sales, Tamika Williams, Swin, Sue Bird, TSpoon, and Kara Wolters, plus Val.

David Stern, Tamika Catchings, Ruth Riley, Lindsay Whalen, and Tangela Smith, Michele Tafoya.

Which one will be announced as commissioner?

Kinda shows me they won't be naming a new commish any time soon if Big Dave is going to be there.

Tafoya for commish... that doesn't sound too bad, actually.

I second dts's nomination. Okay, so it might be hard to balance playing and running the league, but if anyone could be fair, it would be her.
