WIE FINALLY JOINS THE ‘REAL WORLD’

CARLSBAD — Michelle Wie put down the pen on her last final exam at Stanford last Friday and wandered over to the book store for one last, bittersweet visit. On the wall, she looked at the diploma frames and Cardinal license plate holders, the mementos people buy when they’re saying goodbye.

It was beginning to sink in: After 4˝ years of juggling homework and late-night cram sessions at a world-class school with trying to play world-class golf on the LPGA Tour, Wie is moving on to a life she really has never known as a full-time professional golfer.

The first tournament of her new life begins today in the Kia Classic at the La Costa Resort & Spa.

It will be interesting to see how Wie gets out of the gate given her new status as adult.

Some great pairings this week: You can probably watch two. I'd probably start with Tseng, head back in time to watch Webb's group tee off, then go off with the Thompson group, then watch both groups (Wie, Thompson) switching back and forth, depending on who is playing well at the time. Right now the LPGA offers the best players in the world, every time they sell a ticket.

Wie, Brittany Lincicome, Stacy Lewis; Tee #1 12:30 PM

Lexi Thompson, Ai Miyazato, Hee Kyung Seo; Tee #1 12:20 PM

Karrie Webb, Natalie Gulbis, Karen Stupples Tee #1 12:10 PM

Se Ri Pak, Sophie Gustafson, Morgan Pressel Tee #10 12:10 PM

Tseng, Paula Creamer and Suzann Petterson Tee #10 9:05 AM.

LEE, Meena, KORDA, Jessica, KERR, Cristie Tee #10 8:45 AM

Of all those players above, Tseng tied w/Oh at -5 on the lead. I saw Oh play one time, she ended up winning, she hit a pure straight ball, it would take instrumentation to tell if the ball turned a foot either way. If shes hitting it like that again I would expect her to finish well.

Bam Bam is at -4 (25 putts) along with Jennifer Johnson. Wie, Thompson and Korda stunk it up pretty bad, but so did the other name players listed above.

2nd Round notes:

Pak Se Ri shot 66 to take the lead briefly at -7. Pak only lacks the career grand slam to complete her career, The Kraft Nabisco next week so she tends to up her game this time of year.

Yani is on the front nine -3, -8 total. She's starting to play like Annika, if you don't put pressure on her she just cruises thru the field. I don't see anyone close to her as the day progresses. The bumpy greens could be a factor but I doubt it.

Wie shot Harvey Martin (79), Lexi shot 70, Lincicome 73, (3 bogies and a hole in one). Scoring is higher this week, lots of players shooting Harvey Martin and snowman. K-Mac fired a pair of Martins.

The cut is looking like +4, one of the higher numbers you'll see all year. O'Toole is right on the cut line +4 thru 27 holes, 34 putts six bogeys yesterday, on a pace for 32 putts today. Not good enough for pro golf. Making the cut would be a major victory for her.

About the only interesting thing on today's coverage might be watching the first start rookies try to bring it home, make the cut and get their first LPGA check. Hope they show some of the young players.

Caddies. I found this cool photo essay on famous caddies and players. Boy seeing Nicklaus and Angelo, Trevino and Herman, brings back memories. I crack up just thinking about Trevino and Herman.

I noticed that Bam Bam has Inkster's (elbow surgury)caddy on her bag this week, I wonder what happened to her Canadian former LPGA Tour regular A.J. Eathorne. They won twice last year, a first for Bam Bam. What's this all about? Nothing in the press about it.

Final Round underway. Looks like they started early today due to rain all day in the forecast. Coverage will be on tape.

Yani won this easily. SHE IS DOMINATE. This performance was so ho hum, it bears repeating, ho hum. She is at least a shot better than the field, per round, on avg (4 shots), and that is without breaking a sweat.

The Kraft will be interesting because it, despite the poor showing on TV, it is a hard golf course, hit the wrong shot at the wrong time, you pay, and you pay.
