I completely agree. Lauren is the best! Love Liz and Snelly too but it's a shame Tully isn't on the list.

Tully has retired from international competition (otherwise I'm guessing she would be on the list ... probably at the expense of a forward :p)

Speaking as a fan of a team with none - so much so that our best option is probably a naturalised Aussie off-guard - I can say that it's always better to have too many than too few.

Gonna make training camps kinda awkward though.

Yeah, that's just what I was saying elsewhere.
How are they going to properly assess these guards at the camps? Doesn't make sense to me. If they can't trim the guard list lower than this it tell me that they haven't been paying enough attention, considering the national coach has been coaching against most of them in the WNBL for the last 4 months.

Is it possible some of them were selected so they could get a better look, the article says 6 of the players won't be at the first training camp in March because they will be finishing their European seasons, does that affect some of the point guards so they brought in a more to make up for that?

The players in Europe are Summerton, Hurst, Jackson, Phillips, Taylor and Zavecz. So just the six point guards left among the 18 players in the opening camp Wink.

Phillips and Hurst are the only two guards overseas. Graf coached Hurst for the best part of a decade prior to her going to France and I believe was the one who suggested she try Europe to enhance her Opals prospects so I would assume she has been keeping tabs on her.
Phillips I'm guessing would be going as a combo or 2 guard anyway, given how many PGs are in the squad and how few SGs we have. Pretty easy to keep tabs on her too I would think given where she has spent her last 12 months.

That's an interesting point. It would be interesting to see how the camp is run though and how and what each guard is used for since as was mentioned by Richyyy there will still be 6 of them.

Speaking of point guards, I thought Kristi's time has passed. Surprised she's still giving it a shot. They could've talked Leilani Mitchell into neutralizing....

Kristi's time has passed. Unfortunately an injury-prone, past-her-prime Kristi is still our best PG option. I'm assuming we will bring along 2 other PGs in the team to minimise her workload during the tournament, though that still doesn't explain having so many in the preliminary squad.

OK, I'll play...

Using the Team USA recipe:

1 Dominant Big = Lauren Jackson
1 Quality PG = Kathleen MacLeod
1 Alpha Dog Scorer = Penny Taylor
2 Shooters = Natalie Hurst & Rohanee Cox
2 Rebounders = Liz Cambage & Suzy Batkovic
1 Athletic Swing Player = Hanna Zavecz
2 Energy Players off the Bench = Laura Hodges & Belinda Snell
1 Backup PG = Erin Phillips
1 12th Person = Abby Bishop

How is MacLeod not the best option? Based on WNBL numbers she's far ahead of the pack.

Not sure where she would fit. Might put her in Snell's place or instead of Bishop, but both of them are having better WNBL seasons than Jarry.

Yeah, let's get one thing clear - I love me some Jarry. One of my favourite Aussies. But I don't know who to leave out for her. Certainly not Penny, and not O'Hea either at this stage. She doesn't fill a pressing need, so I'm guessing she will miss out on this occasion. I'd like to think she will be in there for the 2014 worlds though. As soon as the olympics are over I'd get her in there and let her see if she can carve out a role for herself.

pilight wrote:

She's tough and she can hit the open shot, but she's not the best distributor going around and I'm not sold on her D either.
Having said that she is still in my team, which FWIW right now looks like this (for today at least):

- Harrower, Richards, MacLeod
- Snell, Phillips
- Taylor, O'Hea
- Jackson, Bishop, Francis
- Cambage, Batkovic

Would really like to fit Cox in there somehow though. Look out for that in Luuuc's Opals v2.0

Just wouldn't be the same without hearing a Brit announcer carry on about Tulu...

She has been playing here in the WNBL for the Logan Thunder, and has had a couple of very solid seasons (thus the recognition by BA in bringing her back into the Opals squad).

I saw her 7.5 assists/game when no one else in the league is over 5 and assumed distributing was her strong point.

Fair assumption. She is blitzing it in the stats this season. When I say distributor what I really mean is a player who actively draws extra defenders and then finds the open players. To me that's not her forte. Then again it doesn't need to be if she has quality targets as she should with the Opals.
It's high time she got a chance internationally and I don't see how they can overlook her this year.

You mean a playmaker, right? Well, I think Richards and, to some extent, Phillips can cover that area.

Thanks. Yes, that's a much better term.
Richards is indeed better in that area, but can also be erratic.

I miss O'Hea on this list. she deserves to be on there. She had a decent rookie year in the wnba. Isnt she going to be co-captain anyway?

Where did you hear she would be co-captain? Also I think she will be on the team, in the article she was one of the few players mentioned, which made it sound like she was a favorite to make the team.

Snelly & O'Hea are both automatic picks. Along with Lauren, Penny, Suzy & Liz they are instant ins, and then the rest of the members will be picked to fill the remaining needs.

I'd think you could just about add Phillips to that list these days, even with Graf in charge.

Do you think Rohanee will make it again? She was a really nice story in 2008....

I'm not familiar with some of the other names but the team below is pretty awesome. Any chance for an upset?

Phillips
O'Hea
Taylor
Jackson
Cambage

Not sure what you mean by upset if you are talking about the selection.

If you are talking about the who will win the Olympics then as yo know an upset or a surprise can happen at anytime.

The odds are probably against it. She just returned to playing this season, and being over here in Perth on an awful team will hurt the perception of her WNBL form. She'll be in the mix, as will Jarry, so I guess her play in the camps will go a long way toward deciding her fate.

She is on mine, but I don't think she's on Carrie's. Either way, I think she will ultimately make it to London.

The way we have been going lately I'll be very happy just to make it to the gold medal game.
Winning it? Well, I guess anything is possible. For example Team USA might all go out and get drunk the night before the game, in which case we'd then have a small chance of winning Wink

Any rational, impartial observer might think that Richyyy, but the team is selected by Carrie Graf - a coach eagerly seeking an introduction to a new and relevant idea. Meantime she's developed an alarming propensity to lose games (lots of games) she should win. In my view Carrie has a real credibility issue and some of those selections speak to that vanishing credibility.

Good video. I agree that Cambage looks great.

Is it just me, or do Richards and O'Hea not have much of an accent at all? *shrug*

Speaking of point guards, I thought Kristi's time has passed. Surprised she's still giving it a shot. They could've talked Leilani Mitchell into neutralizing....

Harrower is Australia's Dick Clark. Even though she's way past her prime, every year they'll pull her out and dust her off.

Hey Luuuc (or anyone),

What has Vealy been up to?

She has been playing here in the WNBL for the Logan Thunder, and has had a couple of very solid seasons (thus the recognition by BA in bringing her back into the Opals squad).

And modelling for female firefighters calendars. Nice tatts. Shocked Laughing

Edit to add pic.

Vealy always wanted to be a firefighter.

Does she want to return to PHX?

And yes, the tats are nice.
