Today's Hartford Courant had an article about Taj being cored by the Sun and listed all the Cored players:

CT: Taj McWilliams-Franklin Very Happy
SASS: Margo Dydek
NYL: Vickie Johnson
SAC: Ticha Penichiero and Yolanda Griffith
CHAR: Dawn Staley
IND: Natalie Williams

Margo Dydek is CORED?? Is San Antonio insane??? And how come Nat but not Catch?? Nothing against Nat, but Catch is the franchise player.

Can players who are NOT cored (i.e. Becky Hammon, C-Rob, etc) get no-trade clauses like baseball players can?? In baseball, a multi-year deal means squat unless you have a no-trade clause (ask Javier Vazquez about that), so can W players do the same??

Catch isn't cored because her contract isn't up.

Margo is scored because she has too much trade value to let walk.

I am so confused about 'coring'. This is what I think I understand.

1. Coring is not for franchise players, at all. It is actually to protect teams from losing valuable players who would otherwise have been UFAs.

2. When a player is cored it is just as likely that the team is planning to trade her.

3. There is no need to core a player if she is currently under contract or a RFA.

4. No new contracts can be written until February.

5. Coring is at the option of the team. The player can only get around this by sitting out for a year.

6. Cored players must be paid the maximum salary.

?????

Would you core an RFA if you were afraid what the other team may pay? How is the salary for an RFA "set" if it's not a max player like LJ.

You can core an RFA. A core offer is a one year max dollar deal. You might core an RFA if you were afraid the player might sign a multi-year deal that your team isn't interested in matching.
