Just confirmed...Geno was not and has not been offered the head coaching position of the Mercury.
When he gets multiple calls out of the blue asking about Geno, what was Seth going to say? Of course WNBA teams would love a big-name college coach to come into the league.
There will be denials in the press later today.

Ahhh it must be "reporters talking out of their arse with regards to the WNBA" day. See the "sacking" of Carrie Graf debacle |

Seth didn't exactly deny the report when called for comment.
"He's one of the best coaches in the game," Seth Sulka said yesterday. "When you're talking about Geno Auriemma, he's going to be at the top of anybody's list. Any WNBA team would be privileged to work with him. It would be a tremendous asset to have such a coach the organization."

and more:
| Quote: |
Said Sulka Sunday: "I feel we have a good situation and have built a good foundation. We'd like to bring in a coach who understands winning and appreciates winning and can transfer that to the players and get through that sense of urgency. We have a lot of respect for what he's accomplished and what he can accomplish."
[snip]
Sulka said he was not sure if he could financially match Auriemma current contract at UConn.

so maybe there hasn't been an offer yet, and maybe Seth was just responding graciously to questions. But he didn't do anything to deny the rumor either.
This isn't just the spinning of the CT media PR machine.

| Womens_hoops, ask the Hartford AP Reporter if Seth denied it. It IS the CT media spinning this.

Right. This quote is also interesting:
| Quote: |
| "This has all happened pretty quickly, but when you have someone like Geno Auriemma, who's one of the best coaches around, he'll be at the top of anyone's list," Phoenix general manager Seth Sulka said Sunday |
Why didn't Seth just flat out deny it? Very odd. Is this a general statement? I'm confused.
Whatever the case may be, I'm not surprised that CT media is spinning.

He doesn't want to sound like he's not interested in Auriemma as coach. If Auriemma has a serious interest in the Merc job, Sulka doesn't want to put him off.
I thought it was odd that he would be offered the job without an interview._________________ If you want a revolution, the only solution's evolve

FYI, the Connecticut Post may be the worst fountain of misinformation this side of the New York Post or Daily News.
It outright sucks, and frequently has incorrect spelling in their headlines! I hated it when I lived in Fairfield County.

That is very true. I should have known something was up when it was in the Post & JI (which is more respectable than the Post), but not the Hartford Courant.

So that would make it a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, then.

Well, presumably the Post (as bad as it is) didn't simply make up the quotes. Probably it called Seth and asked general questions. Possibly it didn't even tell him that the lede was about an offer, or possibly it simply decided not to print any denial.
But this is all a matter of semantics, isn't it?
Regardless of whether any explicit offer has been made, the truth is probably that Geno could have the Merc job (or any number of other WNBA jobs) if he wanted it. (So could Pat.)
Right?

| Is this what happens when there is a break in the playoff schedule? There is NO way that Gino would even think of it. I don't think the story is true...I think the Mercury will wait till after the playoffs to make an offer...and it winr be to Gino.

the Courant didn't have a story in today's paper (I think), but now they have this AP report:
http://www.courant.com/news/local/statewire/hc-05143542.apds.m0682.bc-ct--aurisep05,0,6298201.story
it specifically says that no offer was made, but Seth is quoted as saying that he'll call Geno to see if he has any interest in the job.
Media sidelight: why didn't the Courant have it this morning like the other three papers did? Some explanations:
1. they simply didn't know.
2. they knew but didn't find it credible, or wanted to wait till learning more.
3. they didn't know because it was specifically leaked to certain papers (and not them) by Geno's people. In part, perhaps, because Geno is still mad at the Courant for running the article that led to the State Ethics Committee inquiry.

| Would he still be able to coach in College..I wouldn't think so I'm not sure what NCAA rules would be..but I doubt they would allow that..
