PostPosted: 08/01/11 2:47 pm    ::: Athlete father/WNBA player daughter combinations? Reply Reply with quote

From another WNBA board that I go to, someone wrote the following...

Quote:
Hakeem and Abi Olajuwon are, to my knowledge, one of only three father-daughter combinations to play in the NBA and WNBA. The other two are Harvey and Tamika Catchings and Karl Malone and Cheryl Ford.

In addition, Alan Wiggins, the father of Candace Wiggins, played in Major League Baseball (MLB) and Greg Phillips, the father of Erin Phillips, played in the Australian Football League.

That got me wondering about other fathers who played pro sports, but whose daughter played in the WNBA.

* Former Indiana Fever player Christina Wirth, whose father, Alan Wirth, was a pitcher for several MLB teams in the late-70's/early-80's.

* Jennifer Lacy is the daughter of former MLB outfielder Lee Lacy. Lee was an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 70's and was on the Pittsburgh Pirates' World Series Championship team in 1979.

Any other names?

Well, not her father but certainly worth a mention:

"Lauren’s mother, who stands 6-2, played basketball for the Opals, Australia’s national women’s team, beginning in 1974. She starred for Louisiana State University from 1976 to 1978, returning Down Under each year to join the Opals. Maree was so dominant a center during the late 1970s and early 80s that she was called the female Wilt Chamberlain."

I don't think any one got Duke alum Iciss Tillis. Her dad James Tillis was a heavy weight pro boxer.

I think mothers should count too. This popped into my head when I saw the post about LJ's father (scanning to make sure it was included). Her mother should count as well. Wink
