Hands up, anyone who expected today's winners to be France and Japan.

Two incredibly close games and a major upset by Japan over Germany. If Brazil beats the USA tomorrow, there will be a first time World Cup winner(only Germany, USA & Norway have ever won).
The USA/Brazil winner will play France. The Sweden/Australia winner will play Japan.
If you're haven't been watching the WWC, please start doing so!!! 95% of the matches play in this year's WC have been of very good quality.

Two amazing finishes, my heart sank for the English girl who missed the last PK, but that's just no way to kick a penalty. A little less "fury" and a lot more focus. Just ask Roberto Baggio...
Missed the extra time in the Germany vs. Japan match, but that's easily the biggest upset in the history of women's soccer.

Sweden did play in the 2003 final, losing to Germany 2-1 in extra time.

Just from watching ESPN, the crowd went from chanting to...hearing a pen drop. It was astonishing.

Note if Sweden wins over Australia (or even 'draws'), this will prevent Germany from participation in the 2012 Olympics. UEFA have three slots to fill and one goes to the host nation England. The federation decided that there wasn't enough time to hold a separate qualifying tournament so the World Cup will determine who gets the slots.
France will definitely go through since they advanced further in the tournament than Germany. Germany will have to pray for a loss on Sweden's part. |

If it wasn't for Jeter's 3,000th hit today, I'd say Japan's goal should be the top play of the day on Sportscenter.

Ooh, I hadn't even thought about that. There's going to be some strong support for the Aussies in the stadium tomorrow then.
I have a ticket for the Olympic final. Part of me always wants the chance to see the best teams/players on the biggest stage, but that part that wants GB to have the biggest chance to win is probably bigger. Which means I wouldn't be too sad to see the Germans not even make it to the Games. |

Poor Germany. Personally, I'd like to see a couple more spots for UEFA in the Olympics. |
