I thought the reason for the trade was to create space to sign players, which they did with Ann Wauters and Tina Thompson and the draft pick was more of a bonus because they couldn't create cap space by trading for players.

Good point ... but even so, it would certainly have been a better deal if Nneka dropped to No. 2.

Agreed, it definitely would have made the trade outcome a lot better for Seattle that is, it wouldn't really affect Chicago, they still go a solid deal regardless of who the #2 pick turns out to be.

History's likely to look on the switch a hell of a lot more fondly if they ultimately gave up Shenise Johnson in the deal rather than Nneka Ogwumike.

I am so happy that Chicago traded their #2 pick in the first round for Swin Cash. The 2012 NCAA tournament was an excellent example of the huge gulf between N. Ogwumike and the rest of the senior class of 2012. Thank you, Pokey! Very Happy

A little late now cause someone already posted the draft order, but in the link above by pilight about the draft includes the full draft order. And it's on the wnba.com front page. Wink

updated 4/1/12

Lottery:
1. Los Angeles Sparks 6'2 PF Nneka Ogumike, Stanford
2. Seattle Storm (via Chi) 5'11 SG Shenise Johnson, Miami
3. Minnesota Lynx (via Was) 6'3 PF Glory Johnson, Tennessee
4. Tulsa Shock 6'2 W Shekinna Stricklen, Tennessee

Remaining 1st/2nd Rounds:
http://wnbamockdraft.blogspot.com/2012/04/2012-wnba-mock-draft-50.html

(note: I don't ever include the 3rd Round b/c I believe it is a complete waste of time. Yes I know every now and then a team gets the steal of the draft (i.e. - Minny drafting Charde in 2008), but for the most part it's a crap shoot. These players hardly make it to the 2nd day of training camp and they only make it that far b/c of late arriving players. Please WNBA stop wasting our time and eliminate the 3rd Round already. I don't care if it allows 12 more players to be drafted -- that's just 12 more dreams crushed in training camp thanks to the 11-player rosters. Now if they were to increase the roster sizes back up to 12 or even 13, then I'd say fine, keep the 3rd Round, but only if that happens.)

I'd be happy if the Lynx draft Glory Johnson and Damiris Dantas in the first round.

Q. Brittney, you've always maintained that you wanted to go back to Baylor for your fourth year. Why was that so important to you? And, secondly, not too many college players make the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team. How much would it mean to you to be part of the Olympics this year if you're chosen?
BRITTNEY GRINER: Well, as far as me leaving, I'm staying. I made a commitment. I said I was coming here, and I'm going to stay here until my time's up. So all the speculations of me leaving early are false. I'm staying here right here at Baylor.
COACH MULKEY: Could you say that a little louder? Because some of these keep wanting to keep talking about it. Some want to keep writing about it. Would you just repeat that slowly.
BRITTNEY GRINER: Baylor is my home. I'm staying here. I made a commitment. All the speculations are false. I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying right here.

This still won't be good enough for some of the people here Smile

If this was pat Summitt’s last year and Tennessee offered the job to Kim Mulkey and she took it, I think then maybe Griner would go pro.

Why would Mulkey leave what she's built at Baylor for the Tennessee job?

When you have a chance to possibly win back-to-back titles where you are, you don't leave that for Tennessee. Baylor isn't Tennessee, but right now Baylor is in better shape than Tennessee. 39-0 thus far says so.

I was going to say since they Griner class Mulkey hasn't set the recruiting world on fire. But looking at it I guess there about even.

You have the Sparks picking Riquna Williams (Miami), Kayla Standish (Gonzaga), and Tavelyn James (Eastern Michigan) in the 2nd round, I'm familiar with Riquna and Kayla, but I'm not familiar with Tavelyn James, could you or any one shed some light on her, what are some positives and negatives to her game.

I echo GEF's sentiment. If anyone could shed a light on Ms. James, please do. The numbers suggest she's a small volume-shooting SG. Is there something more (or less)?

It was posted in the coaching thread that Sugar Rodgers is thinking about entering the draft, I can't find her birthday, but I assume she is eligible since she is thinking about it, how does that change the draft if she enters.

That would be hilarious. She wouldn't change any draft orders because a SG who shoots less than 35% from the floor is not a big-time prospect. Last time I saw her play, she looked AWFUL--chucked her little heart out against a fairly average Georgia Tech team.

Probably not, but I couldn't see her going in the first round shooting 34% from the floor. That is AWFUL, especially for a SG.

Tavelyn James is extremely quick and athletic SG from Eastern Michigan, in the Mid-American Conference. She is a very talented shooter and her speed caused problems for opposing teams. She played in the 2011 Pan American Games, and she was the Naismith award winner this year. EMU won the MAC championship but lost in the first round of the NCAA, where Tavelyn was effectively shut down.

She is a tremendous athlete in the MAC but I don't see her making a final roster in the W. She's only 5-7 and I cannot recall her playing much PG; she's always struck me as a pure 2 guard, and it seems that players her size are almost always asked to be a combo guard for the W. Her skill set is much like fellow MAC athlete Lauren Prochaska's, who was cut from the Storm roster in camp last year.

Understandable, I was looking at her stats after you made you post and I didn't think she would go first round either, but I could see her going 2nd or 3rd round. It would be interesting to see what she does though, the other things she tweeted were redshirt, transfers or overseas.

I agree, have to wonder what was going through Michelle Smith's head when she had James going #8.

We already have one of those, and her big 'sister' from Maryland too.

Sugar Rodgers is already 22 years old. With Williams-Flournoy leaving Gtown, I would think she's a good bet to come out.

I think the 1-4 you list [UCDT] is quite probable. What SASS does at 5 will be interesting. PF is not really their area of weakness. Since there really isn't a clear #5 BAA, I could see them taking Wojta, Hayes, or Novosel here. And that of course changes everything on down the line.

NY Times: Can Griner Afford to Stay at Baylor?

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/03/sports/ncaabasketball/womens-college-basketball-needs-griner-but-can-she-afford-to-stay-at-baylor.html?

Quote:
“Everybody tells me I can make millions, but money isn’t everything,” Griner, a junior, said Monday. “Money doesn’t buy happiness. And I made a commitment. When I make a commitment, I keep my word. And these are your best years, in college. I’m just trying to have my full experience. It was never tempting. I never really even had to think or debate about it.”

Of course the WNBA can wait--because she's not ready. And it wouldn't matter whether she came out this year or next because she wouldn't be the #1 overall pick in either draft. So it's best to stay in school and enjoy college life. Tell the media to go to hell. Most of them wouldn't make a major jump like that for $50K, so why should you?

Thank you Smile I'm a WBB fan from Bowling Green, and I got into watching the WNBA last year when Prochaska was trying out for the Storm. She didn't make the cut, but it was enough exposure to the WNBA for me to get hooked! At that point I started following the Lynx because of the Maya Moore hype; at the end of the season I loved the Lynx because of every players' teamwork and talent. I love this game!

I remember, when I was a freshman in college, being involved in a podunk public access tv show (we wrote and acted in skits and stuff... it was really low-rent, but we were having a good time). At one point we got delusional and somehow convinced ourselves that Fox executives had their eyes on us and were likely to snap up our show and put us on prime time network television. A big discussion ensued amongst us delusional folks: would we be willing to leave college and go to Fox to do this show? And, if so, what kind of money would we be looking at, here? Somehow, the number that we started kicking around amongst us was $30k per year, for each of us.

It took me about ten minutes to decide that, yes, I was willing to leave UCLA and go write and act in a Fox television show for $30k per year.

I think about that often whenever I hear people debate the wisdom of college athletes (of whatever gender or sport) jumping early to the pro leagues. I could never negatively judge a student for choosing to leave college early in search of millions (or even, say, $50k), if I was willing to do the exact same thing for $30k.

All the above having been said, I'm positive that Skylar is making the right choice, and Brittney too.

MAC country? You've come to the right place- there's a whole passel of MAC folks who hang out in the college forum.

(Sorry for the tangent, y'all.)

Either that or I'd like to see Prahalis play with Griner in Tulsa.

She could show Sims how you get the ball to the big girl.

I doubt Seattle will take Sammy. I agree that her flashy style could be a hit in Tulsa or Phoenix. I think Seattle is ready to sign another Euro player and thus may be exploring trade options. Given the questions about Stricken's heart after the miss with Monroe, I am betting on one of the Johnson's if they keep the pick.

My gut actually has a toss up between S. Johnson and S. Stricklen for Seattle at the #2 slot right now. I know Coach loves Johnson's steals and scoring, but part of me thinks he may be enamored with the addition of size that comes with Stricklen. Both own the Agler favorite quality of "VERSATILITY" but he has Stricklen at the 1-4 and Johnson at 1-3....I am leaning strongly towards Stricklen unless we have a surprise at #1.

Loved when Nneka said to the Stanford faithful "I'm going to be around still" at the 1:20 mark. Yes she still will be around, only about 2-3 hours away in So-Cal Wink

An amazing career average of 6 PPG and a history of injuries will not get you into the first round.

Does the six to seven hours represent drive time or flight time? Wink
