stever alluded to what was coming in an earlier post. this is the whole ball o' wax. if google is taking over the world, it's doing a great job of it. a colleague downloaded the google desktop earlier this week. he loves it, and i love what i've seen. i'm about to take the plunge today. my favorite feature, just reading about it: ScratchPad.
but the other news in this story is that google gmail is now available (and still free!) to anyone, without need of an invitation. i don't have to sing its praises - many people here already swear by it. best thing about gmail (to me): any time i have to submit an email address on the web, i use my gmail address. that way, junk gets stopped cold and i never see it. second best thing (to me): it can handle email attachments of up to 10mb. and i can't tell you how many times people have asked me to send a large attachment for them, because i could.
(no, i don't have google stock, but i wish i did.)

as pogue says, os x.4 already does all the desktop stuff -- and better. i luv my dashboard.
microsoft is lucky that it has such a generous company to bail it out by making windows marginally more efficient and productive.

i can't go to tiger yet because it doesn't play nice with some work-related clients i need to use. but i've seen dashboard and spotlight, and i seriously doubt microsoft will ever catch up.

If you're not running OSX ver. 10.4, or you're a windows user, you might like this:

Funny that they didn't mention Orkut, which is not only a fad, but a cultural phenomenon with sociological proportions here.
I found people I hadn't seen in a decade and was able to keep tabs on them. Even relatives. It's truly amazing.
