The formerly famous Alt. Rock radio station played the 'Top 105 Songs of the 90s' countdown over this past weekend... Not exactly sure why this weekend, but I would say that Billy Corgan's after concert speech on July 15th played a part in it. Specifically, about how ~"Live 105 doesn't even play my music on the radio" which stung hard I'm sure, considering Live 105 was sponsoring his concert last month at the Fillmore which I went to Razz

Another thing he said as an addendum was ~"You know, I'd love to sell a lot of records, make millions of dollars... I'm not going to BS you about that... But ONE thing you can count on is: I'll Never Sell Out." (Crowd cheers..) Razz

'Buddy Holly' by Weezer.... That song keeps on coming up and I still say it's one of the most annoying songs ever Exclamation Well, at least the chorus... It was even on that Rolling Stone's Top 100 list too. Shocked

it seems nirvana always tops this list. someone would be hard pressed to find a song that defined that entire decade like "smells like teen spirit" did.

Yeah I know... but maybe it just suffered from being overplayed? I mean the last time I went to an Oasis concert, near the end, fans started yelling out song requests, and Wonderwall kept on being shouted.

Finally, Liam Gallagher just yelled out ~"No! Whenever we go on tour Everybody wants to hear that fu*kin' song!" Razz

But if that's the case, what is Green Day's 'Time of Your Life' doing up so high? That's played at just about every graduation ceremony or TV montage Shocked

Courtney gets no Love either.... #98 is her only song and it's not even one of her best ones Exclamation

I can't even listen to "Smells Like Teen Spirit." I can't think of a band I find more obnoxious or infuriating than Nirvana. But that's usually just me Confused

The list includes such a narrow swath of music that to call it the Top Songs of the '90s is way off-base. There was a lot more to '90s music than what people called "alternative rock." Where is the hip-hop, rap, pop, dance, or R&B music.

Consider the following:
TLC's "No Scrubs"
Madonna's "Vogue"
Ben Folds Five entire "Whatever and Ever, Amen" album
Joan Osbourne's "One of Us"
Paula Cole's "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone"
Tupac's "California Love"
Several songs from "janet"
"Miss Misery" by Elliott Smith and his album "XO"
LEN's "Steal My Sunshine"

Even songs like "Mmmmbop" or "I Want It That Way," though much maligned, are the great pop songs.

I do give them credit for putting "Wrong Way" in the top 10 and "Flagpole Sitta" in the top 30.

i've often wondered how far sublime's music reached across the us. since they were from long beach they've been huge here, even after all this time they're in heavy rotation on the stations. are they even played anymore outside of socal?

When they came out, they were pretty huge at Purdue at least. I don't listen to our local radio stations anymore, but I do hear them occassionally on Sirius satallite radio. "Wrong Way" is one of my favorite songs.

what a fucking lame list. for claiming to be so "alternative" they are way short on REM, which practically birthed the "alternative" scene of the 90s. ...and don't try to tell me they didn't. i'm not saying they invented that genre of music, but they had a big part.

Matty's right, this barely scratches the surface. What about rap for example?

Fight the Power by Public Enemy is one of the best ever
Nuthin' But a G Thang by Dr. Dre
Ms Jackson by Outkast
I'm Bad and Mama Said Knock You Out by LL Cool J

and the list can go on and on

Folks, this is an alt rock list.
Top 105 Alt Rock Songs would've been more accurate.

I still hear Sublime here in Minnesota on one of the stations I listen to, I miss them.

I'm liking this list. I'm surprised that Weezer was not higher up with Budd Holly, I still love that song. Janes Addiction should be higher up. I would move Radiohead-creep down on the list. I love Alternative music, thanks for posting the list link.

Thanks for adding more rap. I was having a serious brain freeze when it came to rap.

Nuthin But a G Thang - classic

The 90s for me would have to include Daft Punk's "Around the World."

i'm guessing that since its the list from an alt rock station its going to have nothing but alt rock. kroq 106.7 would have pretty much the same thing. i like when mtv or even vh1 put together a best of list because those are a lil bit more inclusive.

how could a top 90's list leave off anything by snoop dogg or ice cube?

I thought "alt" meant an alternative to the crap that's on the radio. Where's Fugazi? Sunny Day Real Estate? Circle Takes the Square? Jawbreaker?

    No Doubt! Idea

Yeah, I'm suprised 'Sugar Kane' didn't make the list too... They were even featured in that 'Simpsons Go to Lollapalooza' espisode, along with Billy Corgan Shocked

Quote:
(Introducing themselves)
Billy: Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins.
Homer: Homer Simpson, Smiling Politely.

But it looks like their definition of 'Alt. Rock' is pretty general too... Confused For example, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are a ska band, and Prodigy's 'Smack My Bitch Up' is more Techno and really more famous for the music video than the song... Razz I still remember pulling an all-nighter and catching it on MTV the night before they pulled and censored it.. (of course, this was before you could download it on Napster)

Matty- have you ever heard of a band called "Homunculus"? I don't recall if they ever ventured up to Lafayette or not. They were from Bloomington so their safety might have been an issue. Laughing
