The Chicago Blaze today announced that they have hired Shelley Patterson as their head coach for the 2005 season. Patterson has been an assistant coach in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) for the past six seasons, spending one year with the Houston Comets as an operations assistant (1999), four years with the Indiana Fever (2000-03), and the past season with the Phoenix Mercury (2004)

With only 17 days remaining until the first home game of their inaugural season, the Lubbock Hawks professional women's basketball team has lost one of its earliest commitments.

Former Texas Tech standout Plenette Pierson has decided not to play with the Hawks during the 2005 season, the team said in a statement released Saturday.

"We are very disappointed that Plenette has chosen not to play for the Lubbock Hawks," team general manager Ricky Romero said in the statement. "Coach (Sheryl) Estes and I have left numerous messages for her. She has put us in a difficult position with our marketing campaign. We open training camp on Tuesday, so it makes it very difficult to replace her on such short notice."

She's going to Greece!

Colorado will begin training camp with 13 players on the roster, with 10 competing for full-time roster positions. The list of players includes, Team USA Gold Medallist Ruth Riley, WNBA All-Star Becky Hammon, 2004 Chill MVP Katie Cronin, Teresa Hinz, Shawna Hawes, Erin Scholz, Carrie Bacon, Nikki Rouillard, Danielle Coleman, Jasai Ferrucho, Samaiyah Council and Tiffany McCain.

Bringing the list to 13 will be former Colorado State University - Pueblo standout Nadia Fercha, who signed a one-week contract late last week and will compete for one of the final spots.

slovy do you know when she finished school? I assume if she needs winter semester she won't be available.

Thumbs up to the Merc Brigade for immediately pointing out Plenette wouldn't play, even though she committed.

I forgot about that. She was back at UT, huh.

Maybe she'll do like lst year and play about half of the games - when she's available.
